July 11, 201015 yr So I was just reading about the Iranian navy and was wondering if anybody knew how the Iranians got their Kilos to Iran? I know they could have gotten them to the Caspian Sea by river but then how to Bander Abbas? Any knowledge would be appreciated. Thanks, David

July 11, 201015 yr Towed there through the Suez. Is that all the way around Europe or shipyard-->Black Sea--->Suez? I believe the Iranian Project 877EKM submarines were constructed by the Admiralty (Sudomekh) yard in St Petersburg. How exactly they were delivered, I do not know, but at least one was apparently photographed during delivery, under tow in the Med.
July 11, 201015 yr Author Okay, thank you. I just found another source confirming this. Any guesses on the transportation? That seems like an awfully long and slow way to get a ship that far via towing. David

David I've the memory of saw a platform ship in the USN Proceedings magazine but I'm not sure, some years ago, as in: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hea..._submarine.jpeg Another similar picture: http://www.bellona.org/articles/articles_2...sian_submarines
September 1, 201015 yr I never really thought about this in the past, but could a Russian/Iranian crew not sail it there making port calls along the way? Would it be too dangerous to do this or do nations usually want subs with zero miles on them? When us Canadians purchased the Upholders we had crews train in the UK on them prior to sailing them to Canada.
September 6, 201015 yr Yes, quite normal for submarines - even the conventionally powered ones - to make their delivery voyages under their own power.
