The 258th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! ANGLO-EUROPEAN WAR The EC was the first economic system to recover from the World Recession of the 90's. However, the advantage gained was short-lived, with the US economic situation strengthening rapidly. European leaders understood that if the US was to regain its advantage in economics held since the Second World War, the European nations would continue to live under the iron fist of North American dominance. They decided that things must change. When the complete ban on trade with North America was passed in several legislatures of the EC nations, the world was aghast. In effect, the EC declared Col…

The 59th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Yom Hadin: Judgment Day With the fall of the "Soviet Union" and the collapse of the Warsaw Pact, the world has become an even more dangerous place. Third World countries with hard currency are able to purchase many weapons previously unattainable from the arms-rich and cash-poor CIS. Such is the case with Libya. Isolated from the world in early 1992 due to its links with international terrorism, the West expected that Libya would halt its support for terrorism. Nothing could be further from the truth. After implication in several large truck bombings across Europe and overt threats of retaliation from I…

The 282nd NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Beida-La Boom History is replete with interesting surprises. The mercurial leader of Libya, having made much of his reputation as a foe of the West, ultimately decided that the future of his country (and his own future) might be secured more easily by adopting a policy of moderation. He was promptly ousted and forced into exile. The new regime is openly hostile to the West. Its ultimate goal is to dominate North and Central Africa and it has started an agressive campaign of purchasing weapons from nations such as China, North Korea, Russia, and Iran. In addition, it has purchased materials ne…

The 8th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Eyes and Claws (Act I) This is the sixth scenario of the PaSon battleset. These scenarios are designed for beginners. They presume that the USSR did not collapse back in the early 90s. In fact, the Cold War went hot and NATO and the USSR got their shoot out. They met with their best equipment and fought it out. All scenarios of this battleset use the same map, starting with using smaller parts of it. The complexity and thus difficulty of the scenarios increases steadily. Eyes and Claws introduces new tactical elements. You will learn how to coordinate aircraft with ships and submarines. Aerial ref…

The 260th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! BALTIC BREAKOUT Instead of a peaceful transition in government, the Soviet Union, instead, undergoes two very violent and aggressive overthrows in one week. In the confusion during the change of government from communism to democracy and back to communism controlled by military leaders, a general war is started against NATO countries. Two key naval units, though, aren't told in time. The Admiral Gorshkov and the Chernova Ukraina are still docked in the Baltic shipyards. Though the whole world is caught off guard, the German Navy puts up whatever patrols it can. Most units are sunk in the initial att…

The 38th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! The Svalbard Incident Following the demise of the "Evil Empire", the West believed that the "Red Threat" had completely evaporated. However, those same Western governments failed to anticipate the profound effects that hunger and poverty would have on the people of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The government of the CIS, faced a hungry populace on the verge of rebellion, realized that the West either could not or would not provide the massive capital outlays required to end the depression within the CIS. This left the government with the belief that only two options remained: allow the …

The 273rd NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! TRADE BARRIER The rise of the European Community in the mid-1990's had a dramatic effect on the political and economic divisions in the world. Following the prolonged recessionary period which ran rampant throughout the world during the early 90's, the EC was the first economic body to rebound and the recovery was astonishing. What some felt was retribution towards the United States for "forty years of tyranny," the Community took steps to ensure that the Western Hemisphere took a back seat to the new world economic superpower. Soon enough, the EC's actions against the United States and Canada led to d…

The 283rd NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Nicobar Vengeance Friction has been growing between Indonesia and her neighbours. Amongst other issues, Indonesia claims that other nations have been illegally fishing in her waters while other nations accuse Indonesia of not doing enough to reduce piracy. Four days ago, an Indonesian submarine in the waters between the Nicobar islands and Sumatra sank an Indian merchant vessel that it mistook for a commercial fishing boat. Sixteen Indian sailors were killed in the incident. Author: Herman Hum With over 93,000 PlayersDB scenarios downloaded in the last 31 weeks alone, the PlayersDB has proven…

  11. The 125th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Clearing House New World Order battleset #4 - Part 1 - The War with UBAN - Indian Ocean Persian Gulf - #5 CLEARING HOUSE In September 1995, one of the West's not-so-secret desires was fulfilled. Saddam Hussein, the mother-of-all dictators, was assassinated. However, this apparent good fortune has also kindled one of the Western world's darkest fears. In the chaos following Hussein's demise, the "rogue nation" of Iran has taken political control of Iraq. This new nation has further amalgamated with Yemen, Syria, Egypt, and Libya in a new military and economic confederation known as the United Broth…

Does anyone know of a resource for the US Navy (or any other navy, but I'm especially interested in the US navy) that says where ships were deployed, what squadrons they were assigned to, etc. during certain years? I mean, you would think somewhere there should be a year-by-year order of battle, right? Considering how expensive ships are, one would think they would keep track of that sort of thing, and perhaps even write it down somewhere. And especially for something like the 1980s and 1990s, where it hardly matters where the ships were, since it was 20-30 years ago. So it's not like they need to keep it secret. Right? Mind you, while I'm sure it must exist so…

Quick (maybe) question... How can you tell if one ship, helicopter, etc. is sufficient to board another ship? I'm working on a scenario where I've got patrol boats and UH-60s and so on going after a tramp steamer, trying to board (connected to a Possess victory condition), and I can't get it to work. A lot of the time the ships will match course with the target but not try to attack, or they attack and nothing happens, etc. I don't know if this is a database error, a game engine error, or a correct calculation that the assault somehow failed. Anyone have any advice? Thanks.

  14. A question... Generally speaking, if you want to really harass or intimidate another nation, without actually blowing stuff up, how do you do it? And how do you model these things in Harpoon ANW? I suppose one way is to create a Recon Ship mission, so that a potentially hostile ship or aircraft will get right up in the face of anything that gets close enough, like merchant traffic, so it can make a solid identification. It might make people think an attack is imminent, but then nothing happens besides the ship getting right up in your face. I suppose another way, although frankly illegal and probably more risky, would be to board and seize merchant ships, c…

  15. Okay, I have a few questions about designing bases... Now, if I'm just putting together a base for a scenario, I obviously do not have a full blueprint of the facility to use. So I guesstimate things. I assume that I need one of the generic airfields, a control tower, and an ammo depot appropriate to the nation where the base is located. That lets me fly things in and out and provide them with ammunition. But what else should I add? Obviously, some SAMs, some AA guns, etc., but how many? Obviously, some of these things are on trucks and more can be added during a crisis, but generally speaking, how many SAMs and AA guns should a base have? 3 of each for …

Guys, With the H3DB under construction, I just want to remind everyone that the HUD2 is posted and available and there are many scenarios written for it. So give one or two of them a shot and let us know since the H3DB will have some of the elements and spirit of the HUD2. It would also be great to see some new scenarios using this db.

I'm having quite the time putting into place an IADS system into a scenerio. What I'm not understanding in the advanced manual is placing a central command on one side (friendly) and then putting up another side (neutral) for the SAM batallions and having all of them linked together through data links. Can anyone simply explain how this is done? If a site is labeled as friendly how am I going to be able to attack it? And the real big question is how do I have two sides communicate with eachother through data links that have differnet postures?

Hey guys, With ANW DB HUD3 v1.6.2 the DB is a bit daunting if your looking for a specific unit so I asking my seasoned Harpooners if their are any Iranian small boats (i.e. Boghammers or a little larger but smaller than the C-14's) that have ASM capabilities? Thanks again.

  19. Started by Mgellis,

I had a crazy thought... Why not have a competition for small scenario designs for the HUD-4? Each round would have some general rules but some room for creativity--e.g., "A French task force with two warships and one light combatant vs. two groups of three or four gun boats and/or missile boats, anywhere in the world." Or, "A German convoy with two warships and six merchants must make an opposed passage against a nation with one destroyer-sized ship and 6-12 aircraft to use against them." In each case, we're talking relatively small scenarios, with each side having only a few vessels and/or about a dozen aircraft. Designers have 24 hours to produce the scen…

  20. Quick question... Is there any way to set a ship in a scenario as being "damaged"--out of fuel, with 50% damage, etc.? I can edit the weapons down to the bullet, pretty much, with the Logistics menu, but I don't see anything to let me edit the amount of fuel a ship has, its damage percentage, etc. Any way to do this, short of creating a custom database with a damaged version of the ship? Thanks. (I suppose the other option for a disabled ship is to make it its own side, unplayable by a human player, and just give it orders that will make it act as if it is disabled--low speed, maybe setting a Nav zone all around it that it cannot penetrate, etc.--but I don't kn…
