November 4, 200817 yr Hi all - After a 15 year hiatus, I've decided to get back to Harpoon - one of my all-time favorites. I have a couple of questions................ As I read several of the posts here at this forum, it seems that HCE is perhaps more bug-free compared to ANW. Is that a fair conclusion? Also, it sounds like one of the first things I should do upon purchase, is download the Players DB. Is this a fairly intuitive process? Can anybody think of anything else that would be helpful to a noob? Finally, let me say how much I've enjoyed this forum. I look forward to playing the latest permutation of Harpoon and this forum has certainly added to my sense of anticipation. Thanks and take care.......... Al
November 4, 200817 yr Hi all - After a 15 year hiatus, I've decided to get back to Harpoon - one of my all-time favorites. That's good news. Welcome back, Al. I have a couple of questions................ As I read several of the posts here at this forum, it seems that HCE is perhaps more bug-free compared to ANW. Is that a fair conclusion? At the risk of ruffling some feathers, I think it is a fair statement to say that HCE has fewer bugs than ANW. Mind you, ANW is a considerably more complex piece of code. Also, it sounds like one of the first things I should do upon purchase, is download the Players DB. Is this a fairly intuitive process? The PlayersDB is a custom database for Harpoon 3/ANW. If you're buying ANW, then you may want to consider the PlayersDB. It is one of several custom databases available, and appears to be the most popular for multiplayer (MP) games. Can anybody think of anything else that would be helpful to a noob? Hard to say until we know which version of Harpoon you intend to dive into: HCE or ANW, or both! Finally, let me say how much I've enjoyed this forum. I look forward to playing the latest permutation of Harpoon and this forum has certainly added to my sense of anticipation. Thanks, Al. We appreciate that. I'm confident that you'll find HG to be a friendly, helpful place.

Did I read somewhere that some of the tutorials don't function as expected? Going back to my previous question, besides reading the manual and going through the tutorials, what's the best way to get up to speed? Thanks again.
November 4, 200817 yr Welcome back Al, The HCE tutorials (there are two, GIUK scenario 1.0 and WestPac scenario 1.0) work as desired. Past that I'd say download some of the newer scenarios here from HarpGamer (Mark Gellis makes some nice smaller scenarios to get a start with) and give them a whirl. Come back and ask questions as they arise, come chat with us on IRC and you can ask them while playing . PDF of WestPac 1.0 orders in case you want to print them out when you play: http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=263 IRC Chat Java chat: http://www.harpgamer.com/ (left-side) Chat client that often works but sometimes can't connect, a work in progress... http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=281 Suggested smaller scenarios once you get thru the tutorials and any of your old favorites: Oubliette (get your Boomer into position): http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=264 Kore10a1 http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=216 Willpower (a little more advanced) http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=346 After that I'd probably dig into the rest of the WestPac scenario built into the game, then head back to the HG downloads for more EC2003/WestPac/... fun. just my 2 cents

Much to gnaw on, I see. I just can't get over the wealth of scenarios, tips, tactics, AAR's, etc. available here. As an aside, my Harpoon days go back to the early 90's and I'm amazed how well it's stood the test of time. From what I can see, it's grown remarkably in popularity over the past two decades - (or, is the resurgence recent?) Al
November 4, 200817 yr As an aside, my Harpoon days go back to the early 90's and I'm amazed how well it's stood the test of time. From what I can see, it's grown remarkably in popularity over the past two decades - (or, is the resurgence recent?) I would say its been 'steady'. Personalities come and go in the Harpoon world, but it seems there's always been a core group of people who refuse to let the game(s) wither and die. And, largely because of that, Harpoon has actually gotten better with the passage of time rather than being relegated to the dust bin. Not many games can make that claim to fame. We're very proud to be part of that effort.
