July 13, 200818 yr I 've just built a Gulf of Tonkin BS using the BS Builder, and now I'm trying my hand at designing some scenarios to go with it. I have to fess up that scenario construction has never been one of my greater skills. What I would like to do is place some structures ashore, defend them with SAM Sites, land based interceptors, etc, and then attempt to attack and destroy the structures with a CV Air Strike. The problem I have is that structures, SAM sites, etc. do not appear in the initial loading of the scenario, and must be detected by other means. Since launching a strike against structures like this presupposes the location of the target is permanent and known and would be briefed to the aircrews, is there a way to make them appear when the player loads the scenario? The only way I've found is to place an airfield there and then load the structures, SAM Sites, etc. on top of it, but that throws another target into the mix. Thanx for any help, Buddha

Sorry I do not have a technical answer for you, BUT...you could always expand the scope somewhat and have something to do with your RF-8, or Vigilante's? Scope out the targets to then be attacked, given permission from Robert Strange McNamara and his merry band of DOD whiz-kids.

You can pick one of the generic SAM sites (or other generic installation type, such as a Hangar, Large Building, etc) from the Installations annex and use that as your focal point. Alternatively, you could pick a fixed airfield or port, etc, and then tell the player that the target cluster is XX nm to the west from the airfield, etc. Keep in mind that you can change the location of an Installation on the SE map just as you can with a group of ships.

That's what I thought, but it doesn't work the way I mean. My target in this case was 1 Large Building, 1 Small Building, and several SAM and AAA sites. Nothing shows when the scenario is loaded unless I throw in a Port or Airfield. Turning the Radar off isn't a problem, but I still wind up with the Port or Airfield in the targetting mix. I suppose B & R from another location would work, but I'd prefer to have the target appear from the beginning. I've done quite a bit of work with the PE, but I'm by no means an expert. I was hoping that one of you guys knew of some little known switch I could throw in there to make the target visible on the map upon loading. Buddha

As this thing evolves, I intend to do some more research and fine tune the Airwing. Buddha
July 14, 200818 yr Ok, here is what I usually do. I will pick a base, generic or otherwise as to 'mark' the location of the structure (For an example of this take a look at Operation Island Wind in the Scenario Editor, you will see what I mean...there is a stucture at the missile base you must destroy). And that is exactly what I do, place the stucture somewhere in the main body of that base, being sure to use a small area in formation editor...basically I change zone sizes to 4, 6, 8, 12 for that base. For defences, I make a group or multiple groups so that you must detect them yourself (Again reference Operation Island Wind via Scenario Editor). Sometimes I do add the short range defenses (IE AAA mounts) mounts to the base itself, but long range SAMs are almost always in their own groups. This gives you a true layered defense. This accomplishes 2 things. 1 it limits the number of possible target items to sift through when attacking the structure at the base (you need only get in range of the building itself, and you have only the building, short range defenses and base to contend with when you order your strike on base ABC for example), and 2 it makes it a little more challenging with the defenses needing to be taken out first to open the path. The main thing is that if you want to landmark your target, using one of the generic bases and repositioning it is an excellent way to go.
