This scenario was originally built for EC2000. For the re-building process, the editor changed the suffix from SCi to SCm and then ensured that all the units were proper. No idea if this is a contributing factor for this behaviour. Sequence to reproduce: 1. Run scen at high compression from Blue side 2. Sub contacts will just materialize at incredible ranges Expected behaviour: Sonar should not have CZ contacts from 200nm+ range Observed behaviour: Sonar contacts made at 200nm+ range Extraordinary_sonar_range.zip
January 5, 200818 yr That is most certainly NOT an accepted way to change a scenario, oy. Any chance of a two unit test scen that doesn't have such a genesis?
January 6, 200818 yr Author I did some additional testing by removing the submarines and replacing them with EC2003 units and the problem did not recur. This issue can be closed.

January 13, 200818 yr Author I think that I have to resurrect this report. Larry insists that he didn't use improper technique in creating this [second version of the] scenario. He says that he built it from scratch, so there should not be any hidden problems with file formats. Subs are now being detected right through an island and at extreme range. These aren't noisy subs, either. Once contact is with an Akula. January 14, 200818 yr There is a definite misunderstanding here. I did attempt to use the "quick-and-dirty-change-the-suffix" method in my first crack at Rorke's Drift. When I found that this was an improper method that would lead to whackiness, like extreme sonar ranges, I scrapped that version and started from scratch with a blank scenario and handcrafted everything. The version posted today to ScenShare and HarpGamer is this Mark II handcrafted scenario. Sorry for the mix-up, but we can drive a stake through this issue and bury it again.
January 14, 200818 yr Author No, I am running the "Mark II" version of the scenario. The first one was judged by everyone to be faulty from conception. I am testing with the 'hand-crafted' second version built from scratch. That's why I now believe that it is a legitimate problem.

That the detection may be thru Iceland is just something that has to be lived with, as Brad said, like every other energy, in some circumstances sound in water will do strange things. I don't consider a dandy towed array detecting a cavitating nuke boat, even an Akula, to be all that improbable.

I set the Burke's group to creep and ran at high time comporessdion for a while, and got a second sub detection. So, okay, ignoring the island in the way, we have a really good towed array trolling at creep speed, and a cavitating target: optimum conditions. But the range is showing on the order of 340 miles ... I'd have to agree that detection in the 10th or 11th convergence zone seems a tad excessive ...
