The Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney and German auxiliary cruiser HSK Kormoran meet off Dirk Hartog island, Western Australia, and engage in a 30 minute battle that results in their mutual destruction.

 

Sydney is lost with all hands, being the largest loss of life in the history of the Royal Australian Navy and the largest Allied warship lost with all hands during World War II.

 

The wreck of Kormoran is located on 12 March 2008, followed by Sydney five days later.

In Geneva, Iran signs an interim agreement with the P5+1 countries, consisting of a short term freeze of parts of Iran's nuclear program in exchange for reduced economic sanctions.
