Fellow Harpooneers,

 

I just purchased and installed H3 ANW 3.7.0.0, and am going through the tutorials now.

 

I have had and played the original Harpoon, Harpoon II, Harpoon 97 Classic so I'm

reasonably comfortable with H3's interface.

 

I have a couple of questions I'm hoping for help with:

 

1. How far would you suggest I patch it? I have seen the comments to skip any other

3.7 versions and go to 3.8. (I've downloaded the 3.8 patch already).

 

2. Which version from 3.7 thru 3.8 will give me the best selection of user-made

databases and scenarios?

 

I always liked Harpoon II even with the fatal bugs, so I'm looking forward to my

H3 experience.

1. I would update directly to 3.8.0.0 that you downloaded, it is the target against which the scenario designers are scurrying to match.

 

2. This is a tough question to answer, imho 3.8.0.0 wins again. There isn't a ton of material for the ANW series at all (the bulk is still for 3.6.3). I think you will find 3.8.0.0 to work best with the material out there and similarly to the scenarios, the databases are being tweaked for 3.8.0.0. It isn't so much an issue of them working or not (they'll work), it is an issue of the scenarios playing how the scenario designer intended or not (and in some cases Victory Conditions not firing when they should).

 

I'm glad you are looking forward to time with ANW despite the inevitable shortcomings. I play it, test it, and have a good time despite sometimes annoying problems. PlayersDB at present seems to have the broadest 3.8.0.0 compatibility and scenario selection (the database does not use the new flags but is tuned to work well in 3.8). Progress is being made over at HHQ as well, especially in the WWII era.

Before you get too far into the tutorials, I strongly recommend that you read this or else you will run into some problems with the tutorials:

I concur with Tony; patch the game directly to 3.8.0 so that you have the fewest number of problems. The game is still buggy, but you can avoid some of them with the 3.8.0 patch. Also, if you decide to use the ANW MP server hosted by HarpGamer, you must have 3.8.0 as other versions will not allow you to connect to it.
