AJ Heredia Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Hi Folks, I finally got on-board with ANW! but apologies, I have poked around and could not find any FAQs on HUD4. is the concept similar to swapping out the active DB in HCE? I download the latest or preferred version of the HUD file, and copy over the original files in ANW? Do I need to recompile any of my scenarios? Thanks, -Armando Quote
Gunny Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 Hi Armando, To use HUD4, please follow these steps: -create a subfolder called "HUD4" in the databases folder of Harpoon3ANW. -extract the zip file HUD4 to this subfolder -when launching Harpoon, in the launcher, click on the "Database Manager" tab and select "HUD4". -Press OK and launch Harpoon, there you go. AJ Heredia Posted July 4, 2012 Author Report Posted July 4, 2012 Thanks! I played around int the H3 launcher and figured it out last night. Appreciate it. What steps would I need to make sure a scenario worked correctly with a particular database? Would I need to recompile the scenario using the editor? Gunny Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 Armando, The "great leap forward" (Ave Mao) with H3 ANW comes from the launcher. Before it, it was hard to have several databases working together without mismatch problems. Launcher and its "Database manager" tab make it possible to have several db being installed, each in a folder, and associated scenarii in a subfolder. No more risk of mismatches between databases and scens. You can switch as you please. Recompilation is not necessary, since scens will work as long as you don't put an old version of a db with a new version of the scen. Please check not to change anything to the scens folder, due to major overhaul, there are less and less common points between HUD3 and HUD4, even if the latter derivates from the 1st, there are some changes making them different dbs with different scens to work with. sparty Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 So, just copy the scenarios directory over from the HUD 3 to the new created HUD 4 directory? Quote
Mgellis Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 One tip for people new to H3, ANW, HUD-4, etc... Every time the database gets updated, older scenarios have to be updated, too. This is enormously simple, though. 1. Click the icon for the H3 Launcher 2. Click H3 Configuration The Launcher saves whatever editor, database, etc. you last selected, so you don't have to select them every time you play the game if you like what you are using. Check to be sure the scenario editor (and not the database editor) is selected and that the most recent version of the HUD-4 is selected as the Currently Active Database in the Database Manager panel. 3. Click Run (in the Harpoon 3 Editors box, at the bottom left corner of the Launcher window). The scenario editor should open at this point. If it does not open automatically, click between the H3 Launcher icon and the H3 Scenario Editor in the Windows task bar once or twice; this seems to "wake it up" if it isn't already awake. (I haven't had this problem since ANW 3.11 was released, but I mention it here in case it ever matters.) 4. Select whatever scenario you wish to update. The scenario should automatically open in the editor. (If you don't want to peak at what the bad guys have, just click the Current View Mode button--the options are Limited/Show All--in the Viewpoint Selection window to hide them.) 5. Select Edit/Scenario Rebuild/Rebuild All Units 6. Select File/Save You may now close the editor. The scenario should be updated to the Currently Active Database. As you may have gathered, this entire process takes about 30 seconds. 7. Go back to the launcher and click Play Harpoon 3 Ultimate ANW. You should be able to open and play the scenario without any problems. I hope this helps. Mark Quote
sparty Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Good stuff. My problem is that, for whatever reason, the editor won't launch on my machine. It tells me the S/N lookup failed. I can run the game just fine. The text file that contains my serial number is correct. Everything seems to run... My other problem, of course, is that the mouse flickers in and out of existence no matter what I do... It makes playing the game virtually impossible so I'm contenting myself with trying a million things and working on this database/scenario thing to bide my time. Quote

As for the editor, have you downloaded and installed the free update to 3.11? You can get the information at... http://www.matrixgames.com/news/996/Harpoon.-.Ultimate.Edition.Gets.Improvements.and.Fixes.in.New.Update http://www.matrixgames.com/products/392/downloads/ Doing this may solve some of the issues. Also, check to see which editor is currently set up in the Launcher (there was a time-limited beta you used to be able to access and I think it may still be listed as an option even though it does not work anymore...and isn't necessary anyway since the regular editor works fine...I'm pretty sure it will be there if you have not updated to 3.11 yet). The one I use is simply the Harpoon3ScenarioEditor.exe program. As for the mouse flickering in and out, check your video options. (It's the Sound and Video Options pane in the launcher.) I use "Windowed" and 1024 x 768 and that works fine for me, but you may have to play around with different options, depending on what system you have, your graphics card, etc. This may fix the problem. I hope all this helps. Mark Quote
TonyE Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 For the SN check, try running the launcher as administrator (right-click it and Run as Administrator). The Matrix SN checker for some inexplicable reason likes to write to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE portion of your registry (harmless in this case but still inexplicable) and it needs that extra permission to do so. sparty Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 Running as administrator fixed the problem, but the cursor issue is so problematic that I can't stand it... I've requested a refund from Matrixgames. Quote

Mgellis Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 Quick follow-up... Turning off Windowed Mode (if you have it on) may fix the problem, although I find the colors become hideous when I do that. Modifying the Windowed Mode setting (800 x 600 vs. some other setting) may also help. The only other things I can suggest are that perhaps the Mouse Speed could be adjusted...maybe that is causing the flicker? (The control is on the Game Preferences page.) the only other thing that comes to mind is that the Players Database actually caused the game to crash on my machine for some reason. I have no idea why this happened, but once I switched to the HUD-3 and then the HUD-4 the problem went away. Anyone have any other ideas? Also, if you can get the game to play, remember to set the Realism (in the Game Preferences pane on the Launcher) to Auto Datalinks. The Full Realism mode has some bugs (something to do with how communication is modeled in the game engine, as I understand it). Also, check Aircraft Logistics "on"--it makes some of the scenarios a lot more interesting when you have to make sure you are not running out of ammunition. Good luck! Quote
sparty Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 Yeah I've tried a TON of things. - Drivers - Windows and Full Screen in a variety of resolutions - Mouse Speed - USB Mouse, Bluetooth Mouse, Built in Mouse on laptop - Updating BIOS and a variety of other non-graphics related drivers - Sending my DxDiag to Matrix Games Nothing seems to make it work ... Really a massive disappointment. Quote
Mgellis Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 Sorry, I'm stumped. I did post a question about it on the Harpoon group on Facebook, but no one has replied yet (except Gunny, who suggested using different resolutions, but I guess you tried that already). Maybe someone will think of something. Anyway, I'm sorry I couldn't be more help. Quote
