Fortress Keflavik

Featured Replies

Greetings everyone,

I just completed my 3rd attempt at Fortress Keflavik scenario.

The simulation gave me the opportunity for victory after achieving the minimum conditions, but I decided to try and sink all Red force surface vessles. Mission accomplished.

Does this make me some sort of scoundrel?

For those of you who have played this particular battle, have you found a way to compeltely anihalate and sink ALL Red Force vessles, surface and sub?

Also were you able to do any damage to the Red Force airfields?

I sank all the Red Surface forces, and 2 subs at a cost of 10 aircraft.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Is that the original Fortress Keflavik, out of the first GIUK battleset, or one of the re-made versions? Either way that sounds like a good score. Some of the Top Guns around here probably have beat it.

I'm a returning player myself. I recently reinstalled HCE on a newer computer with Win7 on it. And then updated to version 2009.042, I think it was. Runs most of the newer bells and whistles. By the way no problem running on Windows 7. Except for a problem that I caused myself. But it's fixed now.

I ran the Fortress scenario myself recently as a bit of a refresher. Did not do near as well as your score. I had more like 40 planes destroyed. I made some major mistakes at the Stornoway base and patrols from it. Flankers with good AAM missiles and SU-24 with long range land-attack missiles have to be guarded for carefully. I also had a couple examples of air groups popping up on radar where they were already in firing range of my patrols.

I've played this one as Blue, with various releases, more times than I can remember, and I can count the number of subs I've killed on one hand.

There's no need to strike the Red airfields. Besides their being so far away, you have enough in the way of fighter assets at Keflavik to keep a strong CAP up, and your AWACS should give you plenty of warning about approachng bombers.

Well, after you knock off all the surface units, I suppose you could always use the cheat key to locate the remaining subs, and then go back to normal mode to try to hunt and kill them. ;)

I have to admit, I got TOTALLY lucky with the sub kills. There was no particular skill involved on my part ot get the sub kills. As it happened, the "random" placement of one of my Oberon class subs was within 20nm of a Victor I and an Echo II.

I never saw or detected another sub the rest of the way thru the scenario.

I played using HCE 2009.043-2009.50 on my Windows XP desktop.

I want to try and play it again using ANW, but that particular edition creates Blue Screen of Death, so I am hesitant to run it on this computer.

I might install ANW on my laptop and see if it crashes there.

One of the things I was wondering is has anyone played this scenario thru the entire time limit?

One of the things I noticed was I had numerous sorties of Badger G's at Keflavik and Fulcrum and Flanker attacks on my AWACS aircraft. I stoped playing after sinking all the Red surface forces, which was from the log, approximately 16 hours into the scenario.

During that time I never once saw any attack of the Backfire bombers from Kirovsk.

Has anyone seen them? or is this some sort of glitch in the scenario?

I opened the scenario up with the SE, and I see that, unlike the other Red bases, no airstrikes are entered for Kirovsk. No long distance patrols either for that matter. I don't know if this was intentional, or an oversight by the designer.

You might try editing this particular item and then playing it as a user scenario to see what happens.

Link to other folks' experiences with the scenario.

Thanks CV32! I'll be checking that link out sometime this weekend.

Did I post this thread in the incorrect spot in the forums?

Buddha, I too went into scenario editor to see what the RED forces were comprised of, that is how I found out the Backfires were listed. I just thought maybe I didn't play the scenario out long enough to get them involved.

Since I am so new in returning to the game, I will leave it to the experts to do any editing. I'll just break crap! :)

My guess is, that the designer didn't schedule any air strikes as an oversight. But I could also be incorrect with that guess too.

Technically, I suppose, threads about particular scenarios should be in the Scenarios sub forum. I'll move the topic there, but no biggie.

That's why the SE will save it as a user scenario. The original will remain intact, and if you accidentally "break" something, all you have to do is delete the user scenario.

When you open the scenario in SE and select the base, you should see Long Distance Air Patrols Set? and Air Strikes Entered?, each followed by Yes or No. In addition, when you do an analysis of your scenario, you will get a warning that Air Strikes, Formation Patrols, and Long Distance Air Patrols haven't been entered, if that is the case for any of your groups. I always do a full analysis since I invariable forget something and have to fix it to get things to work.
