Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers

Featured Replies

The details are finally emerging of what is going to happen to the Royal Navy as a result of forthcoming defence cuts in this and numerous other articles.

I am confident that in light of all this, the Harpoon team will give an accurate representation of the Brit Senior Service in future patches, with regard to the construction of new warships. In particular, Her Majesty's Government seem to have resurrected an exciting concept originally invented by the Japanese back in '44/5:

THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER WITHOUT AIRCRAFT

The possibilities seem to be as follows:

1) The Queen Elizabeth class sans any aircraft at all.

2) The Queen Elizabeth class with helicopters only (presumaby a few manky old Seakings held together with spit and bailer twine)

3) The Queen Elizabeth class with a) a Swordfish torpedo bomber (we have at least one serviceable example) B) a Seafire (if one still exists) and c) any Grumman Avengers, Hellcats, Corsairs and Devastators still flying, courtesy of the Confederate Airforce. (Hopefully as we Brits are so strapped for cash, the tab for the latter could be added to the lend-lease bill).

Perhaps members of this forum could suggest a useful role for such aircraft carriers. I would have suggested that these platforms were an ideal venue for the holding of cocktail parties, and that the cocktail party be modelled in future versions of Harpoon but unfortunately the 'Cockers-P' was discontinued by the last (Labour) government, again as an economy measure.

Suggestions please!

Pongo.

Although the SAS and other special forces absolutely deserve their due attention, I cannot help but think the services as a whole are perpetually condemned to fighting yesterday's war.

Although the tone of this post was facetious, there are some serious points to be made.

1) What will be the function of the Queen Elizabeth class carriers without any jets?

2) How many vessels will the Royal Navy consist of, and what type?

3) Will this reduced Royal Navy be able to defeat such threats as a determined attempt by Argentina to reclaim the Falklands?

4) Will this all be modelled in future Harpoon ANW and HCE databases/patches with appropriate platforms and scenarios?

1. Very large helicopter carriers.

2. We'll have to see tomorrow.

3. Probably yes; the Falklands are now far better defended locally than in 1982 and Argentina is far weaker.

4. Of course. We have some great people here.

Not very accurate in some things but a good fiction read: Ghost Force by Patrick Robinson covers a modern day invasion of Falklands by Argentina I enjoyed it enough to read in 4 sittings.
