Passive sonar information
Yes! This is the info I was looking for.

Passive sonar information
This has been my experience. A 'Good' solution is going to give you pretty accurate info, plus or minus a little. The longer you have a 'Good' solution, the better that info should get. Ahh. So that makes sense, if you wait, and have a Good Soltn for two or more turns you get more accurate info. Sounds good.

Passive sonar information
Thanks. Perhaps I phrased the question wrong I want to know if lets say a "Good" TMA solution is obtained on the first roll that the contact is detected: a 01!! the target is at 18 nm distance. Beyond the range of the submarine torpedoes. I am playing a refereed game. Does the ref tell me that the target is at 15nm? Does he tell me the course and speed of the contact? After all, it is a "Good" solution. I should know with a "Good" solution if my torpedoes will even reach the target. I think there should be some flexibility on what information is given players. Maybe a "Good" Solution gives range within +/- 1nm. Course and the speed within 1 or 2 knots. Conversely, a "Poor" solution should give the range within +/- 6nm and the speed within +/- 6 knots ect..... What do you think? thanks

Passive sonar information
Once a submarine passively detects a contact and develops a TMA solution, what sort of information is obtained? If a "Good" Solution is obtained, does the submarine know course, speed and range to the target? What about "Fair" and "Poor" solutions? This becomes important when firing torpedoes with limited range and enable points ect. Thanks

Tomahawk question
Anticipating a after-action report forthcoming. Intend to soften up the Iranian positons with the tomahawks from the SSN, then use the BUFFs from Diego Garcia to destroy the Fighter base and ships on the mainland, then Tarawa's air group should be able to mop up. Hopefully there will be something for the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit to do.

Tomahawk question
Thanks. But how do you maneuver the missile in the game with TERCOM guidance?
-
Dogfighting question
Replayed the scenario. Results did vary. But overall, it was a little less one sided. The Syrians were able to destroy a Falcon that was disadvantaged initially. Then the Israelis went to work and destroyed 4 of the 8 Mig 23s. 1 of the 4 Falcons was splashed. Seems a little more realistic.

Tomahawk question
Playing Dave's wonderful scenario: Send in the Marines from Naval Review 2003. Planning to do a surgical strike with Tomahawk LACM. Looking at the annexes at the Tomahawk cruise missiles: My question is: What is TERCOM? I know the tomahawk uses terrain mapping for guidance, but thats it. How is this played in H4? Also, the warhead strength: what does it mean 4x14 for damage? It says 4 attacks. Does this mean 4 attacks at 14 dp strength? or 1 attack at 56 points rolled 4 times? I am guessing that this only involves attacking land targets rolling on the critical hit table. thanks.

Dogfighting question
I did a Bekka valley test scenario a few days back. F-16a vs Mig 23MF. After the salvo of SARH missiles from the Syrians, the Falcons were scattered and low on energy. No kills and beyond dogfight range. But the Floggers lit the burners and accelerated and were able to close with a big speed advantage. I played the rules as written and even though a few of the falcons were disadvantaged( a flogger in its rear arc ) the falcons were still able to go first and two of the floggers that were in a position of advantage (falcon in its forward arc) were shot down before they had a chance to fire. It was a slaughter! Half the Syrians were splashed. No losses to the Israelis. Ill replay and do an AAR

Dogfighting question
Hmmm. It seems a little unrealistic that an aircraft with a 350 knot advantage in speed would not get to go first. Also, if a aircraft is behind another at the start of a dogfight, I should think it should go first irregardless of the maneuver rating. For the first round only.

Dogfighting question
Using the new Sitrep 31 air rules. Regarding Initial conditions of a Dogfight: If a F-16a with a maneuver rating of 4.0 is dogfighting a Mig-23MF with a maneuver rating of 3.0, does the F-16 get to fire first, even though the Mig-23 has a speed advantage? In my test scenario: A F-16a had to maneuver to avoid a SARH missile attack from the Mig-23MF, thus reducing its speed to 350 knots. The Mig 23 was zipping along at 700 knots before the range closed to Dogfight range. Should I have added +2 to the Mig-23s maneuver rating due to speed when the dogfight began? Now, the Mig has a maneuver rating of 5.0 and would get to go first. This would have made a huge difference in my dogfight. thanks

Sitrep #31 AAW
Thanks. Yes Tony, I saw them. Dave just emailed me with a lot of Damage Values. Now I gotta decide what matchups to do!

Sitrep #31 AAW
Just received sitrep 31 and Naval Review 2003. I already own Naval Review 2009 Looking over the new air rules, gonna try them this weekend. Just looking them over quickly, I may use parts of both. I like the randomness of disengaging from a dogfight. Also, I am not sure if it is appropriate to use pilot quality for air to air missile combat. Definately for guns. Seems much less complicated to end a dogfight. I am guessing that the dogfight is no longer "sticky".

SSM and ASuW scenario
Also, advanced types of radar, as ISAR, can provide images of the target, reflected as "classification" flag in Harpoon ANW, I think. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverse_synth..._aperture_radar SAR and ISAR radars are in the H4.1 rules too. When contacts are detected by a radar that classified as SAR or ISAR, the detected aircraft and ships can be classified by type or class, and ground targets can be identified. Dave Thanks I just thought it would be possible with ordinary radar differentiate between contact sizes.

SSM and ASuW scenario
Yes! This makes sense. I assume this rule only applies to Surface to Surface radar contacts. Ground clutter from airborne radar is another kettle of fish altogether!

SSM and ASuW scenario
4.1.1 Sensor Media: Active Radar will give bearing and range only. 4.2.5.2 Land Mass Effects: "A surface radar which has land on the line of sight of a potential contact can only detect it at 1/2 of its normal range." Hope that helps, Pete Yes, but the rule still does not answer the question at what range from shore this takes effect. If a ship is between a shoreline and another ship.

SSM and ASuW scenario
A question along similar lines: Regarding Radar: What type of info should be given if a helicopter picks up a large or small contact, should the size class be given? Radar and land mass effects: What is the range that this rule should take effect? Sooner or alter all LOS will intersect some land somewhere thanks

SSM and ASuW scenario
I would think that the visual horizon would be from the viewing ship height to low altitude, figuring smoke from fire would be about 1000 ft high.

SSM and ASuW scenario
Thanks! So no rules provision for a SSM hit. That sounds realistic. With Crits: I assume that more than one fire or flooding result can occur? Is there any maximum criticals that systems can take?

SSM and ASuW scenario
Designed my own scenario based on a Sea of Dragons scenario between the Singapore Navy and Indonesian pirates. 2x Singapore Sea Wolf PGs vs a Fatahillah class FFL and a PB-57 and 2x pirate skiffs as per the excellent 2009 naval review. I used the many rules found here in playing pirate scenarios and adopted them for the Sea of Dragons scenario. The scenario started as the Sea Wolves heading southeast at 20kn. the civilian tanker was stopped with 2x pirate skiffs alongside. Before the pirates captured the tanker the ships captain was able to sent off a distress signal. The Indonesian PB-57 which was collaborating with the pirates was 1000 yards off. The Sea Wolves accelerated to 28knots to intercept. In the meantime, a Fatahillah entered from the southeast corner of the map heading NW. The Sea Wolves had radar radiating, every other ship was at EMCON. Once the pirates captured the tanker, the tanker radiated its navigation radar and sped off to the southeast along with the PB-57 in attendence. One of the scenario conditions is that the Singapore navy must visually ID the Indonesian pirate vessels. Here is where it begins to get interesting: The tanker, with data from its naviagion radar, was able to give the position of the Sea Wolves, and thus allowed the Fatahillah to launch a salvo of 2x MM38 exocet missiles RBL at the Sea Wolves. The missiles remained undetected as I was using engagement turns. (50%)radar pd At 2nm, one of the Sea Wolves detected one of the missiles and fired its Bofors 57mm and destroyed it. The other missile missed: (40% ph) Small target signature with 2nd Gen J&D. vs a 2nd Gen SSM. After this attack failed, an identical attack was launched by the Fatahillah with the same results. One missile destroyed and the other missed. After this, the Fatahillah ran out of Exocets to fire. Now alerted, the Singapore navy retaliated. One of the Sea Wolves was armed with harpoon. One was launched down the bearing that the attack came from.. Even though the harpoon was detected by the Tanker nav radar and the position radioed to the Fatahillah , it did succeed in hitting the ship and thus received 45dp. The Fatahillah with 48 dp, was dead in the water. The PB-57 decided it was too much and beat a hasty retreat to the SE, while the Tanker surrendered to the Singapore navy. Scenario over. Lessons learned: SSMs must be launched in numbers in order to penetrate defenses. I thought that two MM38 exocets would be sufficient to overwhelm a few PGs. It does seem that electronic warfare modifiers are high: Small signature with 2nd Gen J&D vs a 2nd Gen SSM: (80% chance knocked down to 40%) Bad die rolls hurt the pirates too. One roll of 87 and the other 82!!! Although the BOL harpoon did succeed in hitting its target. Small target signature with 2nd Gen D vs 2nd gen SSM (49% x .75) = 37%ph. Die roll of 22. Gameplay questions: Critical Hits: What happens when 45dp hit a ship with 48dp??? Ratio of 45/3= 15? 21-26 crits ?? This seems a bit excessive. Smoke effects: I looked high and low through the rules and could not find anything. (I used to have FG&DN rules, maybe its in there?) Target information: Would the firing ship know if its missile hit or not? If beyond the visual horizon? If played by referee, what info would he give? Please feel free to give any feedback, or any gameplay mistakes I might have made. thanks

PBeM games
MY first post at this forum. Been playing H4 for 3 months now...solo. Absolutely love the game, but would like to have a live opponent. Does anybody know if there are any PBeM games to join? thanks
