Scenario: Divide and Conquer Introduction: On April 7, 1988, USS Samuel B. Roberts and USS John A. Moore found themselves in this situation when escorting tankers in Earnest Will convoy EW-88023. This scenario will pit two Soviet warships against two aggressive Iranian warships. Location: Persian Gulf, 100 nm east of Manama, Bahrain, May 29, 1987, 1030 Local time. Environment: Sea State 2, wind 12 knots from 315°. Visibility 80%. Tactical Situation: Because of an escalation in Iranian aggressive behavior, a destroyer and a frigate have been tasked to escort the merchant vessels all the way to Kuwait. The players have posted detailed AARs so I will just concentrate on my objectives as the referee and SimPlot creator. The Scenario The objective of this game was to test SimPlot's ability to track and display units on a map, and over a larger area than had been previously attempted. The background map was the entire Persian Gulf, and we used maybe a quarter of that area for the battle. Several cities and bases were placed on the map for reference. The Soviet convoy started near Bahrain and the Iranian task force started near Bushehr. This placed them very far apart, and that meant a protracted search phase.
