SimPlot 2.3 Beta for MacOS View File This is an experiment in using SimPlot on Intel 64 bit MacOS. The dmg file will download but must be activated by clicking on it in the download pane of the browser or double-click on it using Finder (in the Downloads folder). The dmg will open as an attached device (sorry--there is no installer yet for SimPlot). If a window pops up showing the SimPlot2.app file, please close it. Running SP2 from that window will only provide a temporary storage space for the application. Using Finder, create a new sub-folder in your Applications folder (ex: SimPlot2). Drag and drop the SimPlot2.app f…

SimPlot 2.3 for Win10 View File Introduction SimPlot (short for Simple Plotter) is a utility program that supports Harpoon games by automating the movement process in a graphical environment. SimPlot uses a simplified X, Y coordinate system that makes range and bearing calculations easier. North is always at the top of the screen, and the 0, 0 coordinate is the center of the "game area". Each whole number of the coordinate system represents one nautical mile. Presently, SimPlot supports the display and movement for many of the common unit types found in Harpoon: surface ships, subs, aircraft, helicopters, missiles, and torpedo…

Finally got around to downloading 2.2.3, and am blown away by the changes made and the possibilities it opens up. These were just quick tests I did this morning with some maps for another project.

View File Bugout This is the SimPlot setup file for the Harpoon V scenario "Bugout" that is featured in The Naval SITREP issue #60 (April 2021). The installations are on the map, but the ships are not. This way, players may choose where to place them. All the naval ships and missiles that may be used in the scenario are importable, and are located in the Units folder. Civilian ships are an optional rule, but they are not included in the Units folder. They are very simple to create, with the only differences being the type and maximum speed (and size class, but that is not tracked in SimPlot). This scenario is compatible…

  8. Kevin - It is mentioned in SITREP60 that there may be a simplot2 file eventually for the Bugout scenario in the magazine. Does one already exist? I'm going to run this scenario soon and I can make my own easy enough but if the map image and txt file exist already for it (or for that matter, a full scenario file as well as the map files) Regards, Peter Robbins

  9. I am so thankful that the Harpoon V world continues to make improvements, corrections, and enhancements to the rules and data books. Is there any errata available that would show what, specifically, the Jan 8th, 2021 changes were for each of the Harpoon V publications? That would make it a lot easier to fix platform sheets that may have an error on them, identify sections of the rules that perhaps I've been playing incorrectly, and digest new information or rules. Thanks a bunch in advance.

When searching for a sub using passive sonar I'm a little confused on how the initial detection works. I understand the tables, calculating the probability, etc.; however, when contact is made I'm not sure how accurate the initial location is. I've included a simple diagram of 2 squares (searching ships) that have made passive contact with a sub. The next step is for a helo or ASW plane to go find the sub based on the 2 ships' passive contact. I understand that the passive sonar contact won't tell me range or depth but does give direction. Is the passive sonar direction like the diagram on the left where each ship knows exactly what direction the sub i…

I uploaded a new version of the User Guide. I finally filled in the missing procedures, and made corrections to obsolete information. This guide is compatible with the current version of SimPlot 2.0. It is still somewhat incomplete, but the section on creating and modifying units is complete. That is the area I get the most questions for, anyway. The file is available in the Downloads section.

Set up - An A-6E launches 2 Harpoon IC at a Kara class Soviet CG. The Harpoon will reach the Kara in 5 segments (2.5 minutes). The Kara detected it and rolled poorly on the Combat System Reaction table getting a total reaction time of 6 segments. So, the Harpoon will reach the Kara before the Kara can react with its Osa-M or Shtorm SAM systems. The Kara is broadside to the incoming Harpoons and, as such, has a 76mm gun and at least one 30mm CIWS that can shoot at the Harpoons. The Kara's MR-600 3D radar saw the Harpoons at launch, the MPZ-301 LAS radar for the Osa-M, the 4R60 Grom radar for the Shtorm, the MR-105 director for the 76mm, and the MR-123 director for…

  14. Started by Onkle Karl,

In Harpoon scenarios that may span a few days or longer are there any tables or rules for aircraft readiness? For example - An A-6E flies off the carrier and returns in 4 hours, is readied in an hour, and flies off for another 4 hour patrol. How many times in a row can it do that before it needs a longer down time for maintenance, etc.? Another example - There is a squadron of 24 P-3Cs based in Iceland. How many of them would reasonably be expected to be mission ready (i.e. not down for maintenance, etc.)? Could all 24 get launched at once consistently or should xx% be expected to not be available at a given time? Perhaps this is too far into the …

https://discord.gg/t7pekGk in case anyone wants to join a fully public Harpoon 5 Multiplayer discord server. I can help you get to know Simplot2 and how to use it for double-blind games using the Discord channel. We have successfully used this method for both play by post (similar to PBEM style, submit orders, then update Simplot2 then show images then submit next turn orders) and real-time games. Discord offers both voice and video comms too for the realtime games or occasional "team" chats for Red or Blue teams. Excuse the double post to this general forum, but wanted folks to be able to find this if they want to take part. - Peter Robbins

I have a SH-60B Block 0 Seahawk that lights its APS-124 SS radar from medium altitude attempting to find a Large surface contact. The radar LOS from the chart on pg 5-3 of the rules indicates that the maximum LOS is 175nm. The APS-124 maximum range for a large target is 160nm - so, 160nm is the maximum detection range. Section 5.2.5 of the rules for Airborne Surface Search Radars (SS) states that "these radars will pick up surface contacts and VLow air contacts at one-tenth of normal range". Question 1 - If I'm reading that correctly the detection range to a large ship will be 16nm (160nm max of the APS-124 SS divided by 10). Is that correct? Question 2 - If…

  18. I was looking into what air defence radar might be in operation in the UK and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_Integrated_Air_Defense_System#United_Kingdom suggests a combination of Lockheed-Martin AN/TPS-77 & AN/FPS-117 (which I understand are essentially the same, but the TPS-77 version is mobile) and a BaE Systems AR-327 in Cornwall. I wondered if my copy of H4.1 had stats for those radars so went to look. The annex notes on page 1 of "Data Annexes 4.1 - Ships, Aircraft & Weapons" suggests there should be a section J2 for "Land-Based radars" but my book seems to jump from "J1-6 - Annex J1 Naval Radars" straight to "K-1 - Annex K - Fire Control Radars". D…

Hi All, This pod (ALQ-248 AOEW ES pod) starting in 2021 can be loaded onto an MH-60R but the stat line doesn't give any kind of clutter value it just says "Detects location and course of TARH msls? Possibly create false targets". How should I interpret this game play wise? Should it be able to detect incoming TARH's at whatever the radar horizon is? Can I use it to make a false signature of say a B size ship for example? Thank you all for you help in advance btw. Really appreciate this community!

Hello all from Windsor in the UK. I have a copy of Harpoon 4.1 and High Tide but never gotten round to playing it. The release of Harpoon V gives me the nudge to really give it a go. I've ordered the print books from wargame vault and downloaded the quickstart. Does anybody have any general advice for a sensible way to go about learning the game? In my experiments in the past, keeping track of unit locations and separation was a bit of a faff, do people recommend going straight to SimPlot 2 for that? TIA for your suggestions, Windscale.
