Database Question

Featured Replies

OK, I'm using the newly provided blank DB to make my own fictional database. What I want to know is this...since I plan to use many of the weapons and mounts in the current official DB, is there any possible way to copy those two annexes from the official DB into my fictional DB?

(Trust me, I just went through the Installations DB and it was over 1000 bases, not including the double entries (IE red/blue) and SAM locations/Ground unit instances...ughh!)

I've been reading the help files, but they may as well be written in a foreign language, as I can make no sense of them what so ever.

If it is even possible, I'd need to know what to transfer and how to go about it.

The difference between possible and doable with a reasonable amount of labor is a key distinction here.

Possible: scraping units from a DB and dumping them into yours. The trouble is you have to renumber the IDs to be consecutive and as you do that, adjust any related records to point to the proper IDs. To make this happen you'll have to write nice queries and such in Access or your programming/scripting environment of choice.

More plausible: Take one of the existing databases with the permission of the author(s) and work from that rather than from the blank database. Rene Haar took this approach for EuroDB, started with a copy of HCDB and marked most of the installations for re-use (but be loathe to delete entries lest you end up with a gap in ID numbers).

Hmm, well option 1 is completely out. I have no idea how to even write a query, my programming skills are nil...

Option 2 is looking better all the time...wonder who's feet I need to grovel at first...:P

3rd option: Lots of work, but copy to a Excel sheet and reenter all wanted by hand...obviously this would take a few...um...years...
