Turn 1451 Plotting Phase

Featured Replies

Your ships have begun their run towards the convoy.

The helo is returning to Palang. I apologize for not realizing sooner that the helo did not have sufficient range to reach Bandar Bushehr.

There are no changes to the convoy EMCON.

I am pausing to hear from Dylan on the timing of the F-4 launches. As a reminder, the airborne F-4 will RTB at 1600.

So by my calculations it is going to be around an hour before the Iranian surface vessels reach attack position. I'll order my aloft F4 to return-to-base immediately at FMP speed.

15mins to refuel and then relaunch along with the three other F4s.

Orders

A modification to my original attack orders follows:

Continue the 'intercept course' with the missile boats, but accelerate Palang to 30 knots with the same 'intercept run'. Continue this course until Palang crosses the horizon and gets a direct radar contact on S008. Then the missile boats will launch their Harpoons as per the previous order, along with the relevant turning and jammer activation. If the enemy fires at any of us, then they will fire as previously ordered.

Once in range, Palang will fire all four SM-1s at S008 using the Mark 25 fire director, then turn 90 degrees to starboard and head away at 30 knots, but do not activate the jammers.

When the chopper lands on Palang, refuel it and relaunch as quickly as possible, heading back towards the group as before and holding at 15nm from S008 on its starboard side. This will also be involved in the attack as well. When the missiles launch, it is to descend to VLow altitude and conduct an attack run firing its own AS.12s when in range.

(OOC: Hope I'm not giving you too much work, kmart494; from previous experience, I know how hard it is to game out a missile engagement).

Remarks

I've done some number crunching and also run a simulation of the attack in Command. The results don't look pretty. The Sovvie can pump out six SAMs every 30 seconds at a total of three targets; two on each Harpoon will give them a 94% chance for a kill on each. I estimate they will have an engagement window of 90 seconds, which gives them time to take out nine targets total - all eight Harpoons and one of the F-4s.

With our current attack plan, we are only presenting them with 12 targets; with the modified one, we will have 18 (20 if the AS.12s are fired) contacts for them to deal with. Also, I think the Sunburn has a 'home on jam' capability so more chance to hit against a first generation ECM system as found on the DD.

Hopefully, SiimPlot will ease the burden of a complex engagement by automating the movement process. This will be a good test for the program.

Dylan, It looks like you want me to launch all 4 F-4s as soon as they are ready as a group. Any particular altitude and attack path?

To clarify about the chopper, please put it into a loiter racetrack pattern when it gets back to the group, but no closer than 14nm from S008 please.

Yup - it is a suicide mission for us. We're hoping he gets some bad luck or makes some blunders. I still can't think of a better attack strategy for us than the one we've come up with. The Sov makes all the difference.

If they hadn't changed the rules to make the SM1s a direct impact weapon rather than an airburst weapon we might have had a chance launching them first at the Sov and hoping their critical hits scrub the Sovvie's SAM systems off the decks.

More technically, it's a martyrdom mission. Iran viewed the Iran-Iraq War as a jihad and what better jihad than to strike an aggressive blow against a group of atheists who persecute Islam, not to mention kill Muslims in Afghanistan. However, Shia Islam doesn't believe in the whole 'seventy two virgins' thing.
