So: If I upgrade my GE to 2015.27 and reload a saved game, will it behave properly, or should I finish/abort my game before I upgrade?

That depends what version you are coming from. It is always safest to continue a saved game with the version in which you started the scenario since the conversion process often makes some assumptions.

 

Another thing you can do is rename your existing GE and then install the update to get the best of both worlds (i.e. run the old version to finish your game-in-progress and the new version for new scenario starts). I do this at times. On this machine for instance I have:

Winharp32.exe

Winharp32_2015.003.exe

Winharp32_2015.004.exe

Winharp32_2015.006.exe

Winharp32_2015.017.exe

 

One limitation of this approach is you won't be able to use new DBs that make use of > 2047 items per annex until you finish that old game.

 

Some people go really nuts and keep a whole HC install for each major version. If you do that, scrape out HC20 and DigMilArt directories from your template since they take up space without adding much to the gameplay.
