Matrix just released the HUCE 2015.027 patch (yay!). A side-effect is that it is not currently possible to bring HCE up to the current beta version. This may change in the future as more components are updated again.

 

A method of updating HCE (Harpoon Commander's Edition) to the current Beta versions. Note, this is not for HUCE (Harpoon Ultimate Commander's Edition). For HUCE, download and install the 2009.097 patch from Matrix Games, then install any Beta versions on top of that.

1. Have HCE installed. I'm installing HarpoonCommandersEdition-SetupRelease-DR.exe to accomplish this step. The resulting version is 2007.000. For this exercise I'm installing to C:\Matrix Games\HCE

2. Install the 2009.050 update from Matrix. I'm installing HCE-UpdateComprehensiveInstaller-2009.050.exe. The resulting version not unexpectedly is 2009.050. Make sure you specify the same installation location as 1. since it is possible for the installer to pick up the wrong location when it initially guesses.

3. Install the current beta from HarpGamer, http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/topic/2049-current-files/. I'm installing HC2015.011GESEBS.zip. Yes, the instructions at that page say to install over the 2009.097 update but things work even from 2009.050.

If HUCE is the maintained version, why beta HCE? I still don't really understand the various different versions, especially of some are unsupported.

I'm not sure if your question is about the name HUCE vs. HCE or why a beta vs. a released version.

 

a. Name HUCE vs. HCE. To me, they are all Harpoon Classic (HC) and HUCE and HCE were marketing-speak that just confused players and those of us trying to help. Anyway, the current betas are built upon the code of HUCE which in turn was just updates from HCE which in turn was just updates of HC (which in turn was just updates of the original computer Harpoon).

 

b. Why beta? Computer Harpoon is in a strange situation. There is no publisher for the game at present so I doubt Matrix would exert the effort to publish an official patch, if they are even able to legally (I haven't asked as yet and don't know). Nobody has stopped up from working on the code (crazy us being in a position to have our efforts stopped at any moment). So we release betas that for the most part are every bit as quality as a real release.
