July 9, 201312 yr I had a funny run in with Stealth, first I looked it as a case for the Issue Tracker but after some thought this rather gives a good insight into the game's radar model and perhaps a lesson to share with fellow Ninja Pooners. This is HDS3 2.0 the The Libyan Bomb (game video: blindchasehigh.mp4) 8 x F-22 Raptors (AVA) were escorting 20 x F-117A (AKA) along the Libyan costs for a joyride. The Nighthawks have done a good job and are returning home, the Raptors are escorting them, they are happily supercruising on high alt, boldly trusting stealth to cover them and tracking red a/cs around with ESM. Suddenly the ride turns sour when group WHA, 4 x Mig-23, breaks formation and turns on intercept vector. AVA then flies a zig-zag course but WHA is tracking them every turn even when they are outside WHA's radar range, forget about stealth! But how, how? Ok, lets keep our cool, I say easy! close that new browser tab with the Issue Tracker! What is important to know that AVA had a bit of a surprise some 10 minutes earlier when they tripped over an other group of Mig-23s who were carelessly flying around with radars off. It was a nightime visual detection at 4nm, quick exchange of infra AAMs and the Migs went down. BUT This has all happened inside the 200nm range of the Benina ground based AS radar, which normally has no chance detecting the stealth Raptors close to it's maximum range. However the Migs must also have got a visual fix on the Raptors, so then AVA has turned into a TRACKED contact. And here comes the Harpoon radar model, which says that once a contact has been detected it will stay automatically tracked, regardless of PD rolls, until it is inside the radar's range and LOS. Which also gives us the key what should good Raptor do in a situation as this, heel err drop to low, below the Benina LOS to break the radar "lock". See game video: blindchaselow.mp4, after AVA drops to low, WHA goes on a wild goose chase, heading for a distant corner of an ever increasing uncertainty region. Savegame blindchase.hp8 is also attached for anyone who wants to practice with the dragons. Blindchase.zip
