February 6, 201214 yr From RIA Novosti [excerpt] Russia to Deploy 7 Subs in Black Sea by 2017MOSCOW, February 6 (RIA Novosti) Russia’s Black Sea Fleet will have seven diesel-electric submarines by 2017, the fleet’s commander, Rear Admiral Alexander Fedotenkov, said on Monday. CV32: Goes without saying that the plan is optimistic, but even so I expect they will have better luck with an established design like the Project 636 [improved Kilo] than was had with Project 677 [Lada].
February 6, 201214 yr I know they are stilled pissed with georgia but if he means 7 active subs in that small of a space that's seems a little over kill.
February 6, 201214 yr Author I know they are stilled pissed with georgia but if he means 7 active subs in that small of a space that's seems a little over kill. It appears that is the intention. It is highly unlikely that they could all be operational and on deployment at the same time, of course, but in any event, it certainly has the potential to make the Black Sea uncomfortable for any 'intruder'. No doubt they will want to venture farther afield as well.
