Crash problem

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I am hoping you can help with a problem I am having. I have HC2002 and unfortunately I have not been able to complete a game without the game crashing. It seems to just lock up everytime and I have to use task manager to end the program. I haven't been able to pinpoint what event causes this crash as it happens at different times or events each game. I re-installed the game and am having the same problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Can you tell us a bit about your system?

Operating System

Notebook or Desktop

Exact Harpoon version, when in the game, go to Help, then About, what version is listed?

What is one of the scenarios that has resulted in Not Responding?

Does your whole computer ever lock up or is it always just HC2002?

Thanks! We really haven't seen much of what you are mentioning, when the game dies normally it dies from a crash rather than becoming unresponsive.

Sorry, of course that information would help.

I'm using Win XP on a desktop. P4 3 Ghz, Nivida 7800, 1Gb Ram.

I'm using version 2003.16b3 but this happened before the westpac update as well.

This has happened wil all the ones I have tried. The most recent ones were HDSC 01 Opening Day, GIUK 12 Attack the Bastion, and EC2003 10 Return to the Scene.

The computer never locks up, just Harpoon.

Hope this info helps.

Thank you for the information. Nothing obvious sticks out at me, just for the heck of it you might try turning off auto-saves (but then do remember to save manually). When in the game you turn them off by going to the Settings menu, then Game Settings, set Save Every to zero.

I'll run thru those scens with 2003.16b3 in the next two or three days and see if I can't scare something up.

I will turn off the autosave next time I try, however I believe I did try that at some point without any luck. As well, last time I tried a game it crashed 30 sec into the game, long before the autosave would have interfered.

I will attempt to play some more tonight and test some other scenarios.

Thanks for helping as I am dying to play this game since it has been a good 10 years since it occupied so many hours of my evenings.

I tried turning off autosave, but could only set it to 60 min, however the game crashed again prior to that. I tried EC2003 IOPG 07.

Thanks, having trouble finding the time to play at the moment, anyone else have 2003.16b3 to take that scenario for a run? I'll get to it as soon as I can...

So far I cannot recreate any lock up of the game itself. If you manage to find out how to make it happen reliably I'm all ears but I'm fearing it is just a strange confluence on your particular machine. I just played HDSC 01 Opening Day end to end (minimum victory, air defenses at Riyadh were too strong for my TLAMs) without issue (except my Leahy/Spru group wouldn't stay at Creep once I got them out of the gulf, they kept gunning it up to 32 kts

Can anyone else add some suggestions to this thread? My next thoughts go to low probability places, RAM issues, Virus scanner, etc. It is just so strange that the game locks up instead of erroring out, the lock up just isn't a common HC thing unless the whole system locks up (often notebooks that overheat thanks to HC).

fwiw I played on a dual-core notebook with more than 1GB RAM, Vista (eek), game version 2003.16b3.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to pinpoint the problem. I have tried two other scenarios (can't remember which ones) and the first on crashed when I increased the time and the second after 2 of my planes were shot down. In the second case, this wasn't the first message to come up as I had shot down an number of planes and had some of mine shot down as well.

I actually have not tried shutting off my virus program, I will try that next.
