May 30, 201015 yr What is the reason the navy has given for removing Phalanx CIWS from Aircraft Carriers? They are being substituted by RIM-116 RAM (in the CIWS or inner layer missile system role) and RIM-162 ESSM. The main difference is range and firepower. RAM can engage more targets much further away. (ESSM further still.) By the time an incoming missile closes to Phalanx range, you're already in danger of getting hit by fragments. The situation worsens when you add supersonic antiship missiles to the mix.
