"I darned near drowned there," said Moores. Moores, a sailor with the British navy aboard a minesweeper in the English Channel, was heading home to Moores Cove, Newfoundland, on leave when, just before dawn on Oct.14, 1942, a German U-boat torpedoed and sank the SS Caribou.
