Operation Blue Doghouse

written by Mark Gellis

Scenario for ANW V 3.10 and the HUD 4 V 1.1 DB

Started with launching two F-4s in order to protect the task force vs air threats. Launched one RF-4 recon bird to patrol along the coast. One tanker up for refueling if necessary.

A Canadian helo and my RF-4 confirm the first hostile contact, an old minesweeper.

Two Harpoons underway. Both hit, contact is sunk.

Another ship contact is verified as neutral.

Two air contacts detected. My ships instantly fire SM2ERs.

Should be no match for them.

Two hits, aircraft downed.

The RF-4 meets the tanker and starts refueling.

So far all looks as if it is under control.

Two more hostile ac indentified. The F-4s on station instantly launch Sparrows, two more direct kills.

This is interesting, though. In a first short run, the Phantoms did NOT fire any Sparrows at the T-34. When I added larger ac (airborne) for red side, the F-4s launched Sparrows. Thus I thought it had to do with the T-34.

Curious. Maybe it worked this time because my task force was on EMCON active and thus illuminated the targets for the Phantoms? Really not sure.

Doing now pressing with four ATA armed F-4s close to hostile installations.

Two more hostile ac identified.

Again, the F-4s instantly launch their Sparrow missiles. Two more hard kills, they are coming in dumb.

Meanwhile I have prepared for the first attacks. Two F-4s have a SEAD loadout, four others Iron Bombs.

When the ship based, ATA armed Harriers are ready, they will take over the AAW stations and thus increase air superiority.

Then it is time to strike.

Next boogie downed, this time with SAMs, SM2ER.

Is it so easy?

Well, I´ll remain awake and cautious, Mark´s scenarios are never easy to win.

The first pair of Phantoms RTBs.

The Standards down one more hostile ac.

Set up an AAW mission, assigned all six Harriers to it. Thus always two are aloft.

The Canadian helos detect another unknown ship. Identified as a neutral.

Now atacking the hostile Airfield. Have to admit they I´d clearly prefer to detect and attack discrete targets, like SAMs, radars etc. Don´t like this integrated installations.

Reducing reality IMO.

Ouch! Two F-4s downed by Redeye manpads. Two other F-4s deliver their bombs, though.

Think I´ll have to flatten that base not with F-4s, but rather with my ship based attackers.

Test it with a Sea Cobra. Yes, it works. The helo comes close enough and starts pounding the Redeye posts. Ok, more helos underway.

Finally my task force is close enough and starts pounding both hostile installations with 127mm shells. Hope to get the SAMs.

A real artillery duel has begun! The enemy has some coastal 105mm batteries, which were hard to detect. Little damage on the Dahlgreen caused by shells.

Dahlgreen fires back and gets the howitzers.

This is not over. More Redeye posts detected. Usually AFTER they have downed another helo.

Ouch! Some other nasty traps, firing shells at my task force. I´ve directed it too close to the coast.

The Dahlgreen is sinking. Too many hits. It fired until the end.

There is a nasty MBT Platoon firing its 120mm rounds in my ships.

Ok, since I lost a ship it´s only a draw even if I destroy enough hostile facilities. Got ten so far, but not enough.

Nice scenario, Mark!

I just wanted to say thanks, not only for the kind words, but for the quality of the AAR. This is exactly what I think an AAR should be: a clear and detailed blow-by-blow account of what happened when someone tried to complete the mission, along with an assessment of how challenging it was.
