Its Arab neighbors, however, remained staunchly anti-Western in their politics. Egypt was sharply criticized for its "backslide into immorality and sinful collaboration with the enemies of Allah". Libya and Syria threatened to strip Egypt of its guardianship of the Suez. This was correctly perceived as a warning of imminent conflict. (Released January 2001).
