Can't split group
Bizarre. Problems back. Tried saving and closing game, reopening save, it doesn't work now. If I can figure out how to post a save file, I'll try posting it. Czo

Can't split group
But perhaps it doesn't matter. Whatever the problem was, when I closed that game to check some of my saved files (in order to find the right one to post) and then reopened that game, it started allowing me to split groups at will, even if they were at (or under) bingo fuel. Perhaps the game just got grumpy at being left running for many days. Czo

Can't split group
Oh man, time to put my money where my mouth is. I hope this works! I've managed to get one group to split, and it works with other formations, but I've tried dozens of times with the problematic one and except for that one time it hasn't worked. So they are planes attached to the formation at Vagar in the Faroes. I think most of the Nimrods have already crashed, but there are some P-3s left. But try as I might I can't seem to split them. I'll upload a save. Hmmm. Ok, that doesn't work. I tried to attach it, got a warning that "upload failed. You are not permitted to upload this type of file". Is it because I'm a newbie? I tried changing the filename and extension in case it was that, still didn't work. Perhaps it requires the files be compressed in some kind of archive format? thanks, Czo

Can't split group
Hello, Hmm. I'm rapidly becoming the newbie who fills up the board with questions. So I'm playing retreat in the GIUK set. Managed to whip the Soviet north cape air assets, with only a handful of fighters lost. Now I'm getting ready to run the GIUK gauntlet of subs. I've attached all my land based ASW air assets to the air base at Vagar in the Faroes. Since it won't let me set the range rings to larger than 255 miles, this is the only base with which I can get really good coverage of the GUIK gap. So my P3s and Nimrods are flying out of other bases, because they can't land at the short runway at Vagar. I put them in Vagars formation so they actually auto conduct ASW searches. But then I have to manually split them off the group and send them back to their bases when it is time to refuel. Unfortunately, most of the time I can't get them to split from the Vagar group. I go into the menu, split them, hit ok, and +90% of the time, nothing happens. Once or twice they have actually split and I get the "would you like to set a course for this group" popup. I haven't been able to figure out what made it work those times. I haven't ever encountered this problem splitting other groups from formations. I wonder if it is something to do with them not being able to land there. But I've done this once or twice in other scenarios w/o problem. Anyways, many are about to run out of fuel, and I can't split them to send them back to their bases. Anyone have any suggestions on what could be the problem? Am I doing something wrong? thanks, Czo

Very low level flight
Hello, Another question. I've noticed that some planes crash rather consistently and quickly when flying at very low level. I've also found that it seems like I've been able fly F-16s at very low level quite a lot without losing any of them. Is there a rule of some kind, modern planes can do it, older planes can't? Some planes can, some planes can't? Am I imagining this? Does speed matter? If this is indeed the case, does anyone know which planes you can fly at vlow and which you can't? thanks, Czo

Towed Arrays
Is the GIUK 13.0 the one that came with the most recent demo download? Because my Spruances stream, and in the most recent scenario (I think it's called Retreat) the UK Type 23's stream, and so do my subs, but no matter the speed or course, the Perrys don't. Perhaps I'll try splitting on off into it's own group and seeing what it does on it's own. I also noticed the ASuW loadout (Skipper II missiles) won't allow you to launch an attack on ships. And if you launch it as a patrol, and manually set it to attack the ships, they still won't. Says the planes carry no weapons to attack ships. Which isn't really a big deal, cause rarely do I want to attack ships that I'm interested in letting my A-6s get within skipper missile range. Thanks, Czo

Towed Arrays
I'm just using the one that came with most recent version of the free demo. - Czo

Towed Arrays
Your towed array will be useless above 19 knots, though it is incremental and it will perform best at creep (5 knots or slower). It may also take a minute or two for your towed array to 'straighten out' and show up on the map after course and speed changes. As for the formation patrols and the 'sprint and drift', this may be a function of the above (speed/course changes) or something deeper (a bug?) going on. Edit: Had a quick look with the Westpac scenario Backyard. The Improved Spruance class Nicholson, in the ASW ring of the Lincoln formation (AEC), does appear to be sprinting and drifting. And, the SQR-19 passive towed array is deploying and operable during the 'drift' (5 knot creep) phase. It does take a few moments for the array to become operable again after a 'sprint' (33 knots), though, as noted above. Hmm. I'm playing the GUIK scenarios. It seems like the Spruances and subs are using their towed arrays. But the OH Perry class are never using their towed arrays, in spite of being in the same group, same speeds, courses, etc. It looks to me like they have towed arrays equipped, but aren't deploying them. At least, that is how it seems to have worked in the last two scenarios of the series. Any thoughts as to why this would be? It hampers my ASW efforts to have only a third of the decent sonars in my carrier group working. Thanks, Czo

Towed Arrays
Thanks, at least I now know for sure. It appears that my subs deploy fine, and one of my two spruances, but none of my four perry class are deploying. They are set in the ASW zone in the formation, except one out front as a picket. They should be sprinting and drifting I believe, so I'd think at least in the drift the towed array would be working. Towed Arrays
Hello folks, I just started playing this game, a long long time ago I used to play Harpoon Online on AOL. Was glad to see there is still a version out there and supported. I seem to be having some trouble defending my carrier groups against enemy subs. I read in one of the guides that the Perry class frigates have excellent sonar, and I see it is supposed to have a towed array. But according to the range circles, it appears their sonar has less range than the Spruance class destroyers (perhaps not suprising) and also the aegis cruisers. If you go into the unit display, it lists ranges for the main sonar, but the SQR-18 (I think this is the towed array) never shows the ranges listed, which I think means it isn't deployed. Is there some better way to tell if it is deployed? Is there something I'm doing that is preventing it from being deployed? I've played around with speeds a bit, but fast or slow I don't think it deploys. And my carrier group is on a nice straight long course, so I wouldn't think turning would be the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks, Czo PS: Oh, I think I see a grey line behind my Spruance and sub that seems to have working towed arrays. This I'm guessing is the indicator. But still not sure why some of the other ships don't seem to deploy theirs.
