November 6, 200817 yr The 63rd NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Svalbard Oil Battleset The discovery of the third largest oil and gas reserves on the planet near the Svalbard Islands led to a dispute with Russia, who has mining rights and maintains settlements on Spitsbergen, claiming that the islands belong to the chain of islands of Franz Josef Land. Svalbard Oil 1: The Blockade In a surprise move Russia landed troops in Longyearbyen ten days ago and occupied some of the major oil platforms. Norway filed a protest with the UN and requested formal NATO assistance, which immediately was granted. NATO is now assembling forces to break the blockade around the Svalbards, but Norway does not want to wait and intends to show the flag, while Russia reinforces her new possessions. Svalbard Oil 2: NATO Strikes Back The attempt of the Royal Norwegian Navy to settle the dispute over the Svalbard Islands with rather limited resources was a failure, though the two Norwegian submarines managed to sink two warships before being sunk themselves. NATO reaction is quick, aggressive and resourceful: A British CVBG, a Dutch PHIBRON and a German SAG are sailing towards the Svalbards, supported by a number of nuclear and diesel attack submarines. The message is evident: Europe wants to show it can deal with the crisis without the help of the policeman from across the Atlantic, though there are some U.S. units and aircraft in the area ready to assist. But the Russian resolve will soon become apparent. Russia has every intention to keep her occupied new territories as well as the vast oil and gas reserves discovered there and has mobilized everything still available in her military inventory to do so. Perisher Special The USA have agreed a joint exercise with Canada to simulate the forced entry into a hostile country, using moderate air force assets, shore batteries modeling Silkworm launchers and frigates simulating missile boats. Canadian diesel submarines and one British SSN are participating; for the British commander this is a Perisher Special giving him the opportunity to try out an attack on a sophisticated carrier battle group. The End of the Cold War Something went entirely wrong, and it happened so fast that nobody could recall immediately when and where it started. The Soviets were under the impression that NATO was preparing for an attack on the motherland and decreed that securing Iceland for a prolonged war was vital to victory; thus they mobilized each operational vessel in the Northern Fleet and managed to occupy the Faroes as a prelude. NATO then, too, scrambled every available asset in the North Atlantic, and when the first shot (a nuclear-tipped torpedo) was fired and sank a Dutch frigate, all hell broke loose. November 7, 200817 yr Author The 64th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Stealth Attack Four days prior to the U.S. elections, the President decides to solve the Iranian nuclear issue once and for all and authorizes an attack by stealth bombers and fighter bombers based in Diego Garcia and Al Udeid. If the efforts fail, U.S. assets based in the region may be permitted conventional strikes. Iran, however, obtained the news about this top secret information days in advance and managed to secure the help of Russia in defending her territory. Moscow agreed to temporarily base three of her most advanced fighter squadrons in Central Iran and, for the exorbitant price of USD 1 billion, hinted that a sophisticated counter-strike may be a realistic possibility. The Iranian military is on full alert and prepares for pre-emptive strikes against military and civilian targets on the Arabian Peninsula - and in the Near East.
