How can you tell if you can board?

Featured Replies

Quick (maybe) question...

How can you tell if one ship, helicopter, etc. is sufficient to board another ship? I'm working on a scenario where I've got patrol boats and UH-60s and so on going after a tramp steamer, trying to board (connected to a Possess victory condition), and I can't get it to work. A lot of the time the ships will match course with the target but not try to attack, or they attack and nothing happens, etc. I don't know if this is a database error, a game engine error, or a correct calculation that the assault somehow failed. Anyone have any advice? Thanks.

This is no DB issue, this is GE issue. A destroyer will never be boarded by a raft. Russel Sharp, code maker for AGSI is the person who can be contacted for more explanations.

Thanks, Gunny.

What's I've noticed is that it works sometimes, but sometimes it doesn't. For example, I've sent a UH-60 after a merchant and SOMETIMES, the boarding is successful, and sometimes the UH-60 just hovers around and then gets to bingo fuel and flies back to its base, and sometimes it even ignores the bingo fuel warning and stays by the ship and the boarding is successful but the helicopter has to ditch on the way home. I also tried it with various patrol boats and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and with one ship I got a message that the ship could not intercept the merchant, even though it was a patrol boat (too small? no capacity for boarding in terms of necessary troops?).

It sounds like this is just the way the AI determines the boarding mission outcome, rather than anything else. These things are not a guaranteed success, after all, so it makes sense, although it was frustrating when I was testing the scenario and did everything else right and could not get the boarding to work...but it sounds like that wasn't anything to do with the scenario design, just the game engine saying "sometimes you miss."

It works as a "dice roll"... i.e 1-3 on the dice, boarding fails 4-6, boarding is successful. See how Israel got disappointed when boarding Mavi Marmara, and take also the failure of Eagle Claw in 1980. Boarding operations won't be sucessful all the time, they may miss for a lot of reasons. That is awkwardly represented in H3GE.
