  1. Strike at Cam Pha

This scenario is based on a strike by CVW-11 from Kitty Hawk in April 1966 and b
    est played as blue player.

An aerial campaign called "Rolling Thunder" started in 1965 to strike targets in
North Vietnam. For political considerations the campaign did not start with all
out blows against infrastructure targets, but intensity increased over time. Th
is gave the North Vietnamese the time to also increase air defense density and e
    ffectiveness over time.

Now is the time to strike the North's supply lines. While the harbor of Haiphong
is off limits for the "Rolling Thunder" interdiction campaign, the nearby coal
port Cam Pha has been put on the target list.

On the US side Carrier Air Wing 11 (CVW-11) stationed on CV Kitty Hawk is availa
ble for the strike. On the North Vietnamese side MiG interceptors based at Kep a
nd a tightly integrated air defense system over Haiphong and Cam Pha is in place
    .

The target Cam Pha lies in Route Package VIb.

    19th April 1966, CVA-63, CVW-11

Strike Cam Pha (ZXp) harbor and inflict considerable damage to the facilities. Intel has revealed that several SA-2 SAM and AAA batteries guard the harbour. Care has to be taken to at least suppress the SAM batteries while the strike is on target.

Any shipping visually identified as hostile is a priority target and has to be sunk. Take care that no neutral shipping is affected by those strikes.

Haiphong (ZYp) and harbor facilities are off limits. There is a 20 mile no fly zone around Haiphong for this strike.

Kep airfield (ZZa) is also off limits for this strike.

Aboard Kitty Hawk is a squadron of A-1 Skyraider. While carrying a huge bomb load these planes are considered unfit for combat over Route Package VIb and should be kept as a reserve in case need for any SAR mission comes up.

Approximately 100nm north of the carrier group (AAC) a guided missile cruiser (Chicago) is on Red Crown duty, coordinating air interceptions (ABS).

SAR coverage has to be provided by the carrier group (AAC) itself. It is recommended to send helicopters to Red Crown station (ABS), refuel them there and be on alert from there.

    Your strike force consists of
Kitty Hawk and escorts (AAC) with CVW-11
A-6A for strike and SEAD VA-85 "Black Falcons"
A-4C for strike and SEAD VA-113 "Stingers"
A-1H for reserve and SAR VA-115 "Arabs"
A-3B for tanker VAH-4 Det C "Four Runners"
    E-2A for AEW VAW-11 Det C
F-4B for CAP and armed escort VF-114 "Aardvarks"
F-4B for CAP VF-213 "Black Lions"
    RA-5C for recon RVAH-13 "Bats"
    UH-2 for SAR HC-1 Dl Unit C
    RA-3B for recon VAP-61 Det

  2. Operation Knight

This operation reflects a series of armed recce missions during Rolling Thunder. It is a fictional operation that takes place after the Tet offensive. The operation is best played as blue (US).

Besides so called alpha strikes against major targets Up North, Rolling Thunder was an interdiction campaign against the supplies and reinforcements sent from North Vietnam to the south. For operational purposes North Vietnam was divided into 'Route Packages'. The different Route Packages were assigned to Navy or Air Force.

Task Force 77, consisting of two carriers (AAC) plus support vessels, is tasked to conduct armed recce missions over North Vietnam in Route Packages III and IV. This is roughly the area from Thanh Hoa (ZPa) to north of Dong Hoi (ZQa). In the middle between these airfields lies Vinh (YFm), a major hub on the way south. Vinh also marks the southern most extension of the SAM defense, which extends from there all the way to the north of Haiphong.

The Task Force's supporting assets are the guided missile cruisers Horne and Biddle and escorts. Biddle and escort (AES) is on PIRAZ duty, providing intel on activities in the red river delta and is also acting as forward defense for the fleet. Horne and escort (ADS) is acting as Red Crown and coordinates air interceptions. Augmenting the fleets effort is a destroyer group (AFS), cruising closer to the area of operations. Navy Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopters can be found on Biddle (AES) and Horne (ADS). The SAR helicopters are supposed to work with the destroyers (AFS) in case of a SAR operation.

US Air Force (USAF) forces in Korat, Thailand (ABa), are ready to strike the Dong Hoi (ZQa) airfield, which lies in the middle of Route Package II. A squadron of F-4C (escort) and F-105D (strike) and support aircraft are available for this task. The F-105D Thunderchief lack the endurance to make it to the target, so the KC-135 tankers should be used to extend their range.

Further USAF forces are in Nakhom Phanom (ACa), ready for any SAR task..

    Blue Orders:
The operation consists of several parts:

    1) Close Dong Hoi (ZQa) airfield (USAF)
    2) Conduct iron hand missions north of Dong Hoi (ZQa) to Vinh (YFm) (USN)
    3) Conduct iron hand missions north of Vinh (YFm) to Thanh Hoa (ZPa) (USN)
    4) Conduct armed recce north of Doing Hoi (ZQa) to Vinh (YFm) (USN)
    5) Conduct armed recce north of Vinh (YFm) to Thanh Hoa (ZPa) (USN)
    6) Lookout for a stranded pilot, shot down yesterday (neutral); if found launch rescue mission from Nakhon Phanom (ACa) or the destroyer group (AFS)

    Rules of Engagement:
Do not engage enemy outside of Route Package II, III and IV, e.g. north of Thanh Hoa.
Vinh is a protected zone. Only engage air defenses in the city perimeter when attacked first.
Any shipping targets most be positively visually identified first.

Your aircraft is composed of the following:
    Bon Homme Richard
F-8E for CAP (VF-51 "Screaming Eagles")
F-8E for Armed Escort (VF-53 "Iron Angles")
A-4E for Strike (VA-93 "Blue Blazers")

A-4E for SEAD (VA-94 "Mighty Shrikes")
    RF-8G for Recon (VFP-63 Det 31)
    E-1B for AEW (VAW-III Det 31)
    Enterprise
F-4B for CAP (VF-92 "Silver Kings")
F-4B for Armed Escort (VF-96 "Fighting Falcons")
    A-4E for Strike (VA-56 "Champions")
A-6A for Strike (VA-35 "Black Panthers")
    EKA-3B for Jamming (VAW-13 Det 65)

  3. This scenario has been made for the 65-80db and Indochina battleset.

    Operation Weaver

This scenario is fictional, taking place at the height of the Vietnam War two months after the infamous Tet offensive. Best played on Blue side.

After the Tonkin Gulf incident hostilities between the US, allied to South Vietnam, and North Vietnam increased. In 1965 an aerial interdiction campaign named "Rolling Thunder" against targets in North Vietnam was started. While frequently suspended for bombing halts, the campaign went on continuously. The fictional operation weaver is part of this interdiction campaign. Defenses over North Vietnam increased dramatically over time. While at first only AAA and MiG-17s were found, over the years SAMs and modern MiG-21s became real threats to US operations.

Target areas in North Vietnam were divided into 'route packages'. The subject of operation weaver is to strike in route package VIb, namely Haiphong. This important harbor and infrastructure hub was off limits to Rolling Thunder for most of the time. For the North Vietnamese the supplies and replacement parts coming in from Haiphong are very important, hence defenses are tight around the city.

Subject of the operation is to find targets on sea and on land and inflict maximum damage to them. The aircraft from two carriers cruising in the Tonkin Gulf at an area known as 'Yankee Station' are available. Depending on external factors additional CAP and jamming aircraft from Da Nang might be available.

The North Vietnamese side has an integrated air defense system composed of SAMs, AAA and MiGs available. Often the North Vietnamese fighters will be able to sneak up to US aircraft and jump them.

  4. A small scenario during the 1972 Easter Offensive of the NVA. Blue airforce is tasked to destroy a small number of tanks, while red airforce should hinder them.

One question remains open: The A-7 Corsairs have Maverick in their loadout, not sure if this was eligible in 1972.
