Good afternoon! please tell me (if possible) how are the additional rules for the Harpoon 3 edition that are described in the South Atlantic War Scenario Book formulated? I have the latest edition of this book, but it was written for Harpoon 5. I like Rules book '87 better. Thank you.

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking.  The H3 South Atlantic War supplement is GDW 0718.  eBay is where many people go, such as https://www.ebay.com/p/118157409?iid=134309423228

You can also e-mail the Admiralty Trilogy group (Bond, Carlson et. al.) and ask if they might want to shoot you a PDF of the H3 supplement since it sounds like you've purchased the newer supplement.  I haven't heard if this has worked for anyone.  adtrgroup@aol.com

AdmiralTrilogyGroup don't want to do that. For example, GDW - 0711 - Battles of the Third World War has Additional rules: 9.0 Submarine Movement and Endurance, 10.0 Mine Warfare, 10.1 Mines, 10.1.1 Mine Barriers. On the Internet, I read that for South Atlantic War - GDW 0718 there are also Additional rules. Shipping from the US will cost me over $50.

Sorry for the slow reply.  Do you have a communication from AdmiraltyTrilogy that you can share with me saying they won't send you the PDF of the H3 rulebooks?  tony@tgp.net  I can lobby them on your behalf.

At HarpGamer we won't transfer any rules that aren't legally purchased or the transfer approved of by the copyright holders.

Anything older than H4 were not created in pdf format. Larry has told me the file types of the original documents are not supported by modern software.

If the original files exist I bet we could convert them but even so there are scanned and/or photographed copies floating around the interwebz.  As long as the house doesn't burn down, I have my original paper variants acquired from e-Bay over the year (except 4 & 5 for which I'm the original owner).

Thanks for answering. Looks like I need to apologize.

December 6, 2022, I sent an email to adtrgroup@aol.com.

Here is the text of the letter - "Good afternoon! please tell me (if possible) how are the additional rules for the Harpoon 3 edition that are described in the South Atlantic War Scenario Book (GDW 718) formulated? They just didn't answer. Perhaps I did something wrong?

For additional rules. I read this post - https://harpgamer.com/harpforum/topic/3474-basic-game-play-and-purchase-advice/page/2/#comment-11657:~:text=South%20Atlantic%20War% 20II,found%20in%20High%20Tide. , and thought that in the old edition, perhaps there are rules that relate to landing operations (or I'm just mistaken). Even being, in a simplified form, this is very valuable information for me.

I think that the rules of Harpoon are formulated extremely accurately and concisely, and that part of them that is greatly simplified is a clearly defined goal for further development (for me).

GDW 0718 South Atlantic War for Harpoon III

Rules Supplement pages 117-120

4.0 Movement

4.3 Aircraft Movement

  • Speeds affected by altitude
  • Altitude changes are not instantaneous
  • Nap Of Earth (NOE) crash % per resolution phase table

5.0 Detection

  • Sea State effects on Radar range and detection chance
  • Land blocks Radar line of sight

6.0 Combat

  • Lots of targeting, guidance, and attack profile tidbits
  • Shore batteries, anti-tank fire against ships, infantry against ships, etc.

There are no rules in this supplement governing landing operations.  The Combined Arms game is referenced as what to use for the land operations.  The scenarios themselves appear at a quick glance to be either land (Combined Arms) or sea (Harpoon) oriented.  The very first scenario has a landing operation and it is governed by the Combined Arms rules, not Harpoon.  P.24 "Scenario Notes  This scenario is primarily for Combined Arms.  See the rules section for ship-to-shore movement and shore bombardment."

I also checked the other H3 supplements I have, GDW 0711 Battles of the Third World War (no landing operations rules) and GDW 0750 Troubled Waters (no landing operations rules).  Troubled Waters did remind me that there could be some SITREP issues with landing operations but my collection of SITREP issues is tiny and unhelpful.

Thank you, Tony. You helped me a lot. With these theses I can work further.
