In the early hours of Monday morning, RAF Tornado and Typhoon aircraft conducted precision strikes on an ammunition and vehicle depot, and a military communications facility, both near Zlitan. CV32 Posted August 15, 2011 Report Share Posted August 15, 2011 From Jane's [excerpt] RAF aircraft target Libyan frigateBy Sam LaGrone 8/15/2011 A fleet of UK Royal Air Force (RAF) Eurofighter Typhoons and Panavia Tornado GR.4s have badly damaged the only frigate remaining in the hands of Libyan leader Moammar Ghadaffi's forces in strikes on 8 and 9 August, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 11 August. The aircraft struck the Soviet-designed Koni-class vessel, which was alongside in the port of Tripoli, with a Paveway IV laser-guided bomb that inflicted "serious damage and left the vessel taking on water", the MoD said in a statement. The 1,463-ton frigate had previously been hit by NATO air strikes as part of Operation 'Unified Protector' but was still deemed to have an "offensive capability", according to the MoD. An MoD spokesman declined to elaborate on what the specific capability was. A NATO spokesman did not return calls before the time JDW went to press. The missile launch against rebels marks the first use of a tactical ballistic weapon by Gaddafi's troops during the conflict in Libya.No one is believed to have been hurt in the incident. The unconfirmed missile attack comes after US officials said Libyan rebel advances are choking off Libyan forces in the capital Tripoli and significantly increasing pressure on Col Gaddafi. Scud is not really about destroying targets as it is about intimidation and a show of force. Whether it even succeeds in that respect is questionable. What it does do, however, is attract attention. A BBC correspondent with rebels who took Zawiya on Saturday says they have now taken Jaddayim, the first town en route to Tripoli, 40km (25 miles) east. chrism_scotland Posted August 21, 2011 Report Share Posted August 21, 2011 Hopefully the military campaign will soon be over and Gaddafi will be gone, although I'm slightly nervous that an ending of the NATO operation in Libya might spur Sarkozy and Cameron to think intervention in Syria would be a good idea.....
