  1. The 51st NEW Harpoon scenario of the year!

     

    Papa and Son

    The Papa and Son Battleset was written by Ralf Koelbach for the HUD3 and Harpoon ANW. They have been re-written for compatibility with the PlayersDB and Harpoon 3 by Herman Hum with the consent of the author.

     

    These scenarios are designed for beginners. All scenarios use the same map, starting with using smaller parts of this map. The complexity and difficulty of the scenarios increases steadily.

     

    A fourth and fifth scenario has been added to the Papa and Son battleset by Ralf Koelbach.

     

    "Wings of Steel"

     

    In "Wings of Steel", aerial warfare is introduced.

     

    You are facing a Russian anti-surface task force [KUG] approaching the English Channel from the East. At all costs, you must prevent this Task Force from reaching the Atlantic and becoming a major threat to our vital sea lanes.

     

     

    "UnRep or lose"

     

    In "UnRep or lose", Underway (ship-to-ship) Replenishment is introduced. This feature has been introduced with Harpoon 3 ANW; it did not work in older versions (Harpoon 2 or Harpoon 3 up to 3.6.x).

     

    You are facing an ugly situation: War has started some hours ago. The Russians strive to reach the Atlantic with their subs in order to close the vital sea lanes as soon as possible.

     

    Some hostile subs are already in the English Channel. You have to stop them with only few assets available.

     

    While your subs are combat ready, the deadly ASW helos on the Spruance destroyers are not. They are waiting for the torpedo loadouts.

     

    The AOE ship is not far away. Conduct UnRep ops or your helos are toothless and the red subs will break through.

  2. Jerome Chiecchio (a.k.a. Angle of Attack) and I decided to commemorate the new server with a match. We selected Ralf Koelbach's "Wolves vs. Wolves", re-written for compatibility with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

     

    Wolves vs. Wolves gives you a first feeling about what sub vs. sub means. No ships and no aircraft are involved. You can and must concentrate on sub warfare. You will learn how diesel/electric subs perform vs. nuclear attack subs.

    I moved my Sub Brigade towards the opening of the English Channel and out to the Atlantic, my eventual destination. I didn't want to take advantage of the game so I cruised along at 8kts when a flurry of torpedoes erupted in front of my leading Victor II SSN. They were Seehecht 3.

     

    He immediately returned fire with a torpedo on Bearing-Only-Launch and turned to run at Flank speed. It was a close race with the torpedoes exhausting their fuel less than .2nm from his ship. He also alerted his companions. A pair of SS-N-15 Starfish soon landed in the vicinity and ended the life of the ambushing U-Boat.

    After dealing with the German bushwhacker, my subs returned to their original course for the Atlantic. Another subsurface contact was detected by sonar. It wasn't moving, so I thought it might be a rock. However, I decided to be prudent and go around it, nonetheless. All of a sudden, the rock moved at 15kts!

    As well, my guided-missile boat Charlie II detected inbound torpdoes. More Seehecht 3. He fired a SET-65 down the bearing of the torpedoes and turned to flee. However, this time the race would go to Germany as my boat was caught and destroyed. An SS-N-16 Stallion was dropped on the former 'rock' (that turned out to be a French Rubis SSN) to even the score.

    My survivors returned to their original mission. Another sub appeared on their flank when it fired torpedoes. Both returned fire with USET-80 torpedoes and turned evade. However, they did note that the torpedoes did not increase to full speed even though they were wire-guided. I only realized too late that I was being goaded to move in another direction when more Seehecht 3 appeared in front of my Victor in flight. The run time was so short that he didn't even have time to deploy any decoys before they struck.

     

    With the destruction of my second sub, AoA was awarded victory. It was a great game. Many thanks to Jerome for the match and the use of his server.

  4. The 46th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year!

     

    To Enter Paradise

    Historians in the 21st Century will not agree on a start date for the First EurAsian War; some will argue, in fact, that there was none: the FEW will be for them nothing but a coalescing of several separate local wars. All will agree, however, that the collapse of the Soviet Union and then the partial collapse of the Western monetary system created a number of interacting power vacuums. And while the Rightful Restoration and the Koranic Compact initiated the creation of a new world order, they also fanned the flames of smouldering and ongoing conflicts all across Asia and Europe...

     

    The First EurAsian War will spread to the Indian sub-continent and the Middle East simultaneously. In 1992 and 1993, the New Russian Republic (under Gospodin Boris Yeltsin) and the short-lived CIS will have made a serious attempt to control all of the old Soviet nuclear weapons and to systematically destroy many of them. They will be 99.9% successful. This scenario will examine the results of that near perfection as it unfolds in India.

     

    In late December of 1996, three trucks will leave Lahore (Pakistan) and enter India at Amritsar. Their drivers will be three Indian brothers. Their father was one of the many nameless that had died trying to build the Ayodhya mosque in 1991. These brothers take their Islamic religion seriously; and they will not forget. They will have made this particular trip dozens of times. Until that day, their cargo will always have been cotton -- for their Uncle's mills.

     

    A tactical nuclear device does not weigh much. Neither does a notebook computer and a reasonably effective detonating mechanism. Certainly, the routine weigh-in outside of Amritsar will reveal nothing unusual. Only Geiger counters, or a complete unloading of the hundred odd bales of cotton in each truck could have done that. Needless to say, that won't happen. As a consequence, three 50 Kiloton nuclear "landmines" will enter India undetected in late December 1996.

     

    The three brothers will take breakfast together one last time in Karmal. Jinnah will leave first, his journey being the longest -- and, as it turns out, the only one that will be successful. He will arrive in early January. And Allah will be smiling...

     

    Jinnah lifted the lid of his notebook computer and waited as it booted itself up. He smiled as the screen displayed a reminder his mother had suggested... "Be sure to say your prayers, Jinnah. Now press <return> to enter Paradise."

     

    The Restored Romanov Empire

     

    Civil War in the old Soviet Republics culminated in the restoration of the Romanov family to the Russian Throne in 1996 (the so-called Rightful Restoration). The Romanov's have gained ascendancy over their Social Fundamentalist adversaries. The European Union, originally neutral, has committed itself reluctantly to the Fundamentalist cause.

     

    All of Cobalt Shiva's scenarios take place in the course of what he calls the First Eurasian War (FEW), 1996-99.

     

    This scenario is a re-make of a Harpoon Classic scenario from the Harpoon Designers Series I and has been re-made for Harpoon 3 with the consent of AGSI.

  6. Jeronimo Chiecchio (a.k.a. AoA) met up to try out a new scenario. We chose Ralf Koelbach's Mixed Doubles, re-made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB. These scenarios were written by Ralf Koelbach for the HUD3 and Harpoon ANW and have been re-written for compatibility with the PlayersDB and Harpoon 3 by Herman Hum with the consent of the author.

     

    This is the third scenario of the PaSon battleset. These scenarios are designed for beginners. They presume that the USSR did not collapse back in the early 90s. In fact, the Cold War went hot and NATO and the USSR got their shoot out. They met with their best equipment and fought it out. All scenarios of this battleset use the same map, starting with using smaller parts of it. The complexity and difficulty of the scenarios increases steadily.

    I was in charge of a Russian Surface action Group [sAG] ordered to break out into the Atlantic and AoA was the NATO commander standing in my way. We started the scenario and I found myself with a number of submarines just outside of torpedo range from his little flotilla. As he cruised along blissfully unaware of my presence, my Akula-class SSN opened fire with Type 65 torpedoes. I was aiming for the Ticonderoga with her superb AEgis system, but I'd pretty much settle for anything I got.

     

    The 4x 50 knot torpedoes raced in against the 30 knot task force and caught them after a long chase. Unfortunately, they only managed to kill a single Spruance destroyer. :( The response was quick and devastating. My Akula sub was sunk along with another diesel sub in close proximity as was an Echo II missile-guided sub (but not before she launched her missiles :) ).

    Not long afterwards, AoA was to return the favour. One of his diesel-electric subs had also found my ships. I managed to get a quick sonar contact off of him from a range of 5nm and turned just before he opened fire with a brace of Mk24 Tigerfish torpedoes. Unfortunately (for him), his torpedoes could only make 35kts while my ships ran at 30kts. The speed difference was unable to close the distance. A pair of SS-N-14 Silex missiles landed torpedoes right atop his position and the brave little submarine could not evade both of them.

    As my other submarines closed on his task group, they stumbled over a second diesel boat. Not wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth, my Victor II commander dropped a pair of UGMT torpedoes from SS-N-15a Starfish rockets onto him. He didn't want the situation to escalate, so he did not elect to employ his nuclear-tipped weapons. However, he did a magnificent job of evading both. A Kilo-class SSK boat heard the commotion and also dropped a pair on him. Again, with no result. :( That little sub was good. The enemy quickly detected my two attacking boats and sank them with Mk46 ASW torpedoes. As a sop to my pride, the NATO SSK kept firing Seehecht torpedoes at a phantom contact that must have been on his sonar screen. Both of my subs were already dead, but he kept firing torpedo after torpedo at the ghostly image. :)

    The sacrifice of my two subs was not in vain as it drew attention away from another pair of submrines penetrating the NATO screens. Another Kilo SSK and a Victor III SSN were just barely able to make the interception. As soon as the SSN was in range of the CG Leahy, he let loose with a pair of Type 65s. I didn't want to risk the chance of detection and then having the targets run. Unfortunately, this ruined the firing solutions the SSK was developing. The torpedoes ran down their targets after a long chase. One Duke-class frigate and one Bremen-class frigate were sunk. Somehow, the big cruiser targets kept managing to escape my torpedo barrages! Once their positions were revealed by the attack, both submarines were tracked down and destroyed soon afterwards.

    With only one Tango-class submarine left in my order of battle, I was severely limited in my options. Luckily, he found himself between the enemy and my own ships; a perfect position. As the enemy moved to attack my SAG, he ran right over the sub. Just as she was attempting launch her weapons, a game bug caused her demise. Arrrrgh. :(

    Not long afterwards, the NATO SAG had closed with my own and I decided to open fire with everything at a range of 60nm. It would turn out to be a bit premature as it allowed the AEgis cruiser and the CG Leahy to summarily shoot down all my missiles.

    The NATO riposte was quick in coming. A wave of 32 Harpoons appeared on the radar screens and nearly swamped my SAM defenses. It was a good thing that a number of NATO ships had already been sunk. Otherwise, serious damage could have been inflicted. As it was, the fleet was able to bring down all the Harpoon without sustaining any damage.

    The NATO mission was to stop me, but my mission was not to kill the NATO platforms. My orders were to break out into the Atlantic to interdict the vital merchant convoys. As NATO moved in to engage with guns and SAMs, I ordered my flotilla to 'sprint for the finish line'. Destroyers Burnyy and Kashin were ordered to screen the rest of the SAG with torpedoes as best they could. While no one likes rear-guard actions, they are necessary and the sacrifice of a few for the overall mission is sometimes a military imperative.

     

    NATO saw the manoeuvre and tried to cut them off, but I sporadically launched USET-80 torpedoes to keep the enemy at a distance. The screening destroyers paid a heavy price for their actions as SAM after SAM hit them, but they were fulfilling their duty. As NATO surged forward recklessly, they ran right into the USET-80 torpedoes. The remainder of the NATO force was soon slipping beneath the waves as the battered rear-guards slowly re-joined the SAG and moved into the Atlantic and victory.

    As always, a very nicely coordinated scenario.

     

    The strike assets I had were just barely enough to get the job done. Extensive tanking required, but right on the edge of mission range.

     

    Just reinforces the point that if you don't have any stand-off munitions, even little SAM ManPADS systems can be quite lethal. :D

  8. RedMike grew weary of his ANW bug-testing so we met up for a quick match. We chose Freek Scheper's Interfet-Stabilize, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

     

    East Timor is an old Portuguese colony which was annexed by Indonesia in 1975. In August 1999, the citizenry overwhelmingly voted for independence, and, almost immedately afterwards, Indonesian-backed militia bacame active. By September, 250.000 people had fled the killings.

     

    In September, President Habibi of Indonesia finally agreed to the deployment of a multinational UN-peacekeeping force in East Timor so long as it was primarily Asian troops.

     

    While US, New Zealand, Italian, Singapore, Malaysian, and Norwegian troops began the long preparations for deployment, Australia was ready and an amphibious convoy put to sea.

     

    Indonesia objected strongly to this breach of the agreement.

    I assumed the role of the Indonesian liberators while RedMike controlled the meddlesome UN.

     

    I could see that there were only two approaches to the landing site on Timor so I went about setting up ambuscades both to the East and West of the island. In the East, I had two gunboats blockade the strait. Although it was currently night, I hoped that they would still be able to detect any potential interlopers. To the West, I ordered the SS Chakra to maintain vigil. A Puma helo was sent aloft to assist her in identification of the many various radar contacts.

    Not long afterwards, her sonar was able to identify the distinct acoustic signatures of the landing ships, Balikpapan and Westralia. Chakra set a course to intercept while announcing the position to the various missile and gunboats. It was almost too perfect. The UN fleet was sailing right towards the sub and the escorts seemed to be screening the northern side of the group and not the path of intended movement. I cut the throttle right back and just sat there waiting for them like a hole in the water. When the distance was only 2nm, I announced her presence with a full salvo of torpedoes. Two were targeted on each transport.

     

    The slow transports never had a chance as first Westralia, then Balikpapan, and then one more were struck by the torpedoes. RedMike was furious and managed to launch a torpedo back towards the Chakra, but it was too little, too late. The Chakra was sunk, but the 'official statement' was that she was never in the area in the first place. Complete plausible deniability was maintained.

    There is a slight problem with the scenario. The written orders say that the Indonesians need to sink 2 vessels, but the ViCond is set for 3. It's a mis-match that needs to be clarified.

  9. SilentHunter and I reversed positions for this latest re-match of, "Shadow the Boomer".

    I was now commanding a Los Angeles-class sub looking for a Russian SSBN. I approached the area cautiously and at moderately low speed. Lots of contacts appeared and I was able to classify many of them. A small KPUG was detected consisting of Grisha and other corvettes. Since they were heading away from me, I should be able to pass behind them.

    As I moved in, sonar suddenly reported a contact and it was CLOSE! It was less than 2nm away and moving further. I was sitting nicely in its baffles, but it could turn around at any instant. I decided to fire while the enemy was likely blind and ordered firing point procedures for tubes one and three. Soon, two Mk 48 torpedoes were on their way. The run time was short and I was rewarded by an explosion.

    Unfortunately, this action alerted the enemy of my presence and I sonar soon reported a 'sea of torpedoes'. There were at least 5 enemy fish out there. The enemy could not know my precise location, but he was conducting 'reconnaissance by fire'. Although I didn't not believe them to be much of a threat, the had the unfortunate effect of causing that corvette group to turn in my direction to evade the torpedoes. They were getting dangerously close so I had to set up firing point procedures for two of them. A pair of Mk 48s ended their flight.

     

    The enemy torpedoes also revealed the presence of HMNS Kobben as well as HMS Trafalgar. They were close enough to force them to activate their sonar and evade. Both submarines were caught by the massive Type 65 torpedoes. My own sub survived a close encounter by releasing a decoy.

    As things settled down, I resumed my hunt for the Boomer. I kept my speed below 10kts and listened carefully. Sonar reported a contact that was subsequently lost, so I knew that I was probably in the general area. After more searching, I decided to gamble and go active. If the Russians could use unusual tactics, so could I. On the second sweep, a solid contact appeared. It was less than 2nm distant. I immediately ordered three Mk 48s fired on it and cut the wires before turning and running in the opposition direction. The five inch room was all prepared to drop noisemakers and decoys when a thunderous explosion was detected. The boomer was now dead. I set course for my egress point, but failed to arrive in the time set by my orders. Thus, the game ended in a draw.

  10. The 44th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year!

    On 13 August, 2008, President Bush directed the United States Navy to oversee a "rigorous and ongoing" air and naval humanitarian mission to Georgia.

     

    20 August, 2008, DDG McFaul, WHEC Dallas, and LCC Mount Whitney were soon enroute to Georgia after picking up aid supplies in Crete.

     

    21 August, 2008, Russian forces block the only land entrance to the Georgian port of Poti after vowing to withdraw troops the day before.

  11. The Lightnings are simply lethal. The only time they revealed themselves is when they fired. Otherwise, they were invisible to all forms of radar.

     

    I found the JSF to be formidable as well, but they were only "invisible" when their own radars were silent. This happened a few times, especially when they attempted to sneak into Russian territory and shoot down my orbiting Mainstays. They took several of my Su-27 and Su-35 Flankers when I attempted to go toe to toe with them.

    The Lightnings gave themselves away only when they turned on their own radar. A couple of them managed to waltz in and do damage if they kept their radar off.

     

    In the future, if I ever have F-35 on my side, I'm never going to turn on the radar. I'll just go wherever I please and fire away. I don't think that this good for the AI.

     

    To make the AI truly challenging, is there a way to 'remove' the radar from the F-35? Or, possibly just add the radar as a 'pod' to certain loadouts? A radar-less F-35 with a load of AMRAAM is going to be invincible.

    I was the Norwegian side and I sent my ships out to find the Russians. We were on EmCon since I hoped that a visual sighting would be to my advantage. Soon enough, one boat bumped into a Nanuchka and opened fire with her guns and SSMs. The problem was, she didn't have a perfect location on the target for her missiles. They promptly overflew the intended target and activated past her.

     

    And found one of my other missile boats! Blue-on-Blue. What a way to die. :(

     

    Not long afterwards, a second boat bumped into a Russian and the same result. She fired, but this time, the Russkie managed to let loose with his SS-N-9 Sirens and I lost 3 boats to his one.

     

    With only a corvette and one missile boat remaining, I had to be careful. Loss of the corvette would mean loss of the scenario. So, I took her out of harm's way and searched with the Hugin missile boat.

     

    After a few hours, I found the remaining Nanuchka "hiding" behind the stern of a fishing trawler. The sneaky bugger was using the fishermen as a shield; knowing that I couldn't fire SSMs at him without risking a killing blow to the Neutrals. Luckily, I was already within gun range and promptly poured fire into his surprised ship thereby sinking it.

    A Georgian Affair

    On 8 August, 2008, ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet deployed to the coast of Georgia to take participate in the "forcing to peace" operation.

     

    The Ukrainian government saw the writing on the wall. With this invasion, the Kremlin was re-asserting control over its sphere of influence on the former Soviet republics.

     

    In hopes of checking future aggression from Crimean bases leased to Russia, the Ukrainian parliament demanded that the vessels which participated in this naked act of aggression not return to those ports.

  14. I saw the same as CV32. There are no Red orders. I played the game through as Red, anyway.

     

    I'm very impressed with the scenario. Action occurs throughout. You have lots of variety in the units and even though it is a Monster-sized scenario, it doesn't feel like a 'brute-force' treatment. Defences are well laid out and inter-locking.

     

    The Lightnings are simply lethal. The only time they revealed themselves is when they fired. Otherwise, they were invisible to all forms of radar.

     

    Although I did run the game through and destroyed all the Blue units, I was unable to trigger any ViConds at any point in time.

     

    There appear to be "duplicates" of some bases. Is this intentional? i.e. there appear to be 2 Komaki airfields.

  15. Great AAR. The perspective from my side as little different.

     

    I ordered my SSBN to clear the harbour at maximum speed. I wanted to get out as fast as possible and then close in on my deployment point at creep speed in hopes losing any potential snooper. I followed orders and stayed on surface behind my accompanying icebreaker when sonar reported a torpedo in the water!

     

    Evidently, a Victor III on patrol had mistaken me for an enemy SSN and opened fire with a Type 65-76 torpedo. I immediately dove and deployed a noisemaker. The decoy drew the torpedo away. There certainly would be a reckoning in the Severomorsk Submariners Club when we got home.

     

    I managed to reach the seabuoy and dove according to orders. I could hear a Los Angeles-class sub cruising around at 19kts. He was engaging someone that I did not detect. It could have been one of the diesel submarines assigned to the area, but I had no idea where they were. Unfortunately, the SSKs did not kill the American submarine.

     

    I set course for my second assigned position while keeping a wary eye out for the Los Angeles sub. As I was nearing my second patrol point, the data to the American boat firmed up and she was about 10nm away. I didn't have any SS-N-15 Starfish or SS-N-16 Stallions available, but I thought that a long-ranged USET-80 torpedo shot might at least send him running in the opposite direction and allow me to escape.

     

    As soon as I fired the two torpedoes on Bearing-Only-Launch, sonar reported transients behind us! The Trafalgar had been shadowing me for quite some time and mistaken my torpedo attack on the Los Angeles as an attack on him, so he opened fire with his Spearfish. I tried to turn my torpedoes onto the newly detected contact, but the Spearfish struck before I had the chance. I guess I should have pulled a Crazy Ivan earlier.

  20. Well Herman thanx for your help on this scen if you had played as Blue i think it would have been a little bit harder .

    It does say in the briefing Blue only and there is a Herman tribute in the blue orders but thanx for checkin it out anyway

    Yes, I saw my name in the orders when I played the Blue side, last night. Many thanks for the inclusion. :)

     

    The Blue side is definitely much tougher. The air attacks against my bases with ALCM was pretty impressive. When faced with hundreds of cruise missiles and not able to do the same to Red was very much a challenge. Your decision to restrict the B-52s from carrying ALCM was a good idea.

     

    I sent the B-1s out with JASSM and they got lucky enough to kill Ukrainka, but got the crap shot out of me going after Ussuriysk and the other bases. The B-1s were detected just as they got near their release points. You set up some good CAP and AEW coverage.

     

    The number of SAMs you placed around the bases was phenomenal. It was good to see that you did not only place the top-end SA-21/20/10 and had some SA-6 and SA-8 mixed in, too.

     

    With a scenario duration of 30 days, I took my time organizing my ships. I had them stay at creep to avoid the known sub threat. Because I did not rush around, I think that your recon assets had a tough time finding me. Your Tu-95 Bears reached their patrol positions just outside the range of my ships. I don't think that they helped much when they went active because they were too far away. So long as I stayed out of range, they could not detect me and send in the bombers.

     

    The subs did do lots of damage to the fleet. The SSGNs got 2 AEgis cruisers, a DDG, and 2 FFGs. Placing them within my formation made them very effective. I'm not a big fan of having the subs start inside my perimeter, but it does work.

     

    I did manage to finally hammer down all the bases through attrition. Another thing you might consider is that the Tu-16 Jammers are coming out in groups of 3-4 planes. I don't think that having 4 Jammers in a group is going to improve their coverage and effectiveness. If one is shot down, the others can continue the mission. However, when all four are at the same location, it's just as easy to shoot down 4 as it is to shoot down 1. I think that lone Jamming groups will serve your purpose much better.

     

    You might also like to try a "creeping wall" of ECM. i.e. deploy the first jammer at 100nm out from your base. As it degrades my radar, the next jammer can deploy at 120nm, then 140nm, etc. This might help you survive long enough to get the jammers close enough to my formation as they get shot down fairly easily.

     

    The ALCM attacks throughout the game kept me on my toes. I could not transfer the assets away from the bases due to them. That's a good thing, IMO. I was always wondering when the next wave was incoming. However, they did seem to come from only one direction. Perhaps you could consider making attacks from different bases so that I have multiple threat axes to defend against.

  21. The other subs were placed where they were because we have different ideas about what constitutes a 'direct route', I think. My thought was that the departure and destination areas are at roughly the same latitude, and so the path would stay at roughly that latitude all the way across, which would take blue forces right through the middle of the Azores. You seem to have taken more of a great circle route, which in retrospect is perhaps more logical, but for some reason just never occurred to me. As a result, a lot of the subs would have been out of position for you. I'll fix that if I do a version 1.1.

    IIRC, I think that all I did was plot a single line path directly to Gibraltar from each task grouping. I don't think that the paths ever led anywhere near the Azores.

     

    I wish Christopher much luck with his book so that we can have some sequels for some more scenarios. :D
