  1. After 12 months of dodging and evading, Scott Tortorice finally accepted a challenge for honourable battle in Harpoon. This was his baptism of MP fire. After picking through the scenario selection, he selected Watch that First Step, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

LOCATION : NW PACIFIC, COASTAL SEATTLE

    DATE/TIME: 12 FEBRUARY 1985, 06:00:00 ZULU

With the first war shots, DEFCON ONE status was automatic. Every submarine in the inventory that was capable of getting underway left port for the greater safety of the open sea. Only those boats with mechanical deficiencies remained docked, to leave when their problems were fixed. As a part of standing plans, all the assets of the United States Coast Guard were folded into the Navy's TOE, to be employed in such a way as to free regular Navy assets for higher priority missions. Their mission: sanitize the area around the sub bases, allowing the remaining subs to get to open water.

    attachment.php?attachmentid=23439&stc=1&d=1228213389

I commanded the Russians ordered to destroy an Ohio-class SSBN while Scott controlled the USN. Tony Eischens observed the undersea battle. As the SSBNs were attempting to debouch into the Pacific Ocean from the Juan de Fuca Strait, I tried to close in and plug the bottle. All my units crept in to simulate what I hoped was a tightening ring.

Three surface units were detected almost immediately. Although they were not my primary targets, their towed sonar arrays and ASW helos would prove to be dangerous factors that I could not ignore. Not long afterwards, one WHEC cutter came across the path of a Victor III-class SSN. Two Type 65 torpedoes were fired. The torpedoes were detected and the cutter ran to evade, but the 50kt chase speed allowed hiim to be caught... and both missed! Immediately, two more were fired on bearing-only-launch [bOL]. Their speed was only 30kts while the cutter could make 29kts. A hit would take some extraordinarly luck (something which I had not seen, yet).

The cutter was not taking the attack lying down, either. Either an Orion MPA or an ASW helo soon appeared and torpedoes were in the water. The counter-measures room deploy decoys. My luck was starting to change as the enemy weapons all missed. I was rewarded by a thunderous explosion. Evidently, one of my torpedoes had also caught the cutter. The Victor managed to creep out of the area.

An Alfa-class SSN was next to find a cutter running across its bow. Three wake-homing torpedoes were fired. Only one was really needed to break her bow. Unfortunately, she, too, must have either deployed a helo or called in an orbiting Orion to prosecute the Alfa. No weapon was detected. The Alfa just disappeared to make the score even.

My remaining submarines and the sole surviving enemy surface combatant closed on the bay. A Sierra II-class SSN found itself following right behind the RCN destroyer, Iroquois. The Iroquis was only making 5 kts, but I was directly in her baffles. After closing to a range of 6nm, three Type 65s were fired. The destroyer detected them immediately and salvoed her own torpedoes. Both sides evaded, but luck was with my submarine and not the Americans, again. Three decoys were deployed successfully, but the destroyer was sunk by the 1000kg warhead.

Unfortunately, my luck would turn, once again. As the searching submarines combed the approaches to the Strait, not a hint of the enemy SSBNs was to be found. The Ohios really did sound like "a hole in the ocean." Regrettably, I failed to make contact with the SSBNs and they escaped. Neither side successfully completed their Victory Conditions and the game ended in a draw. TonyE observed that, although my subs had come close to the SSBN Ohio, they failed to detect the super-quiet vessels.

A really fun match. Thanks to Scott for the match and to AoA for the use of his server.

  2. Well, I have edit almost everything again: ViConds, orders, alternative paths, bases, individual units... The only thing I have kept are groups and positions from the original scenario.

I think you mis-understand. You cannot edit your way out of your current predicament. There is no amount of editing you can do on your Bear Goes South 2 scenario that will get rid of all the potential incompatibility problems.

The fact that you started with *.SC1 and changed it to *.SCm is the entire problem. If you want to write the *.SCm scenario, everyone is telling you to re-start from nothing. If you want to avoid the problems, you need to re-start the entire process from the beginning.

It's your scenario. If you want to accept the potential problems, that is no one's business but your own. However, we (the game's programmer, other scenario designers, and fellow players, alike) are all telling you that the process you used is flawed and likely to create problematic behaviours that cannot be explained. Not every problem will be visible. If you are satisfied with it and do not want to re-start, no one is going to force you to do anything.

  3. I'm nominating Freek Schepers for the Harpoonist's Lifetime award for his undying contribution to Harpoon3 scenario design, willingness to play others head-to-head, hosting his own ANW MP server for the benefit of other players, and bug finding talents.

I nominate Jeronimo Chiecchio as the Harpoonist of the Year for providing the community with an invaluable via his ANW MP server. Without this server, there would be no MP play, whatsoever.

  4. AIM-120D vs C-130

    85 (AIM-120D) - 5 (C-130 DATA) = 80 (difference in ATA)

    Chance = difference in ATA + 30, therefore 110 = 80 + 30, Chance = 110

Roll the dice, but needn't bother since the chance to hit is 110%

    Isn't there always a 5% chance of a miss?

I was under the impression that it was a hard-wired value so that there was always a chance of a miss. It might have been in H3, but appears to have been removed in ANW.

  5. When I renamed the scenario I got some Tu-95 Bear taking off from Kiev carriers. So you have to edit the individual units again.

Those are just some of the problems you can see. There are probably other problems you will not even notice. For example, your ViConds could be all messed up.

This process does not work. If you want to switch battlesets, the only way to do it properly is to start from a blank scenario. You have to re-do everything. Insert all the bases, ships, subs, planes, order,....

If you insist on doing it the way you have already done, you better be prepared for odd things happening. You are just asking for trouble.

  6. P.D.: I hope "Bear Goes South 2" will be posted. It is an improved conversion from Original-GIUK.sc1 battleset to EC2003-GIUK.scm battleset. I have included your ideas and set start speed. It also has another features more.

I am examining your Bears Go South 2 and see that it is for the EC2003 battleset.

Did you write a new scenario from scratch? or did you simply change the *.SC1 suffix to *.SCm and start editing it with the EC 2003 GIUK battleset?

If you just changed the suffix, then you may have some problems. Another fellow was updating old *.SC1 scenarios to EC 2003 standards and tried that. He was advised that he should start over from the beginning with an empty file and re-insert all the bases, planes, ViConds, orders,...

I don't know if it is a problem, but that is where the discussion and advice went.

  7. Try:

    1. Select the group that has no starting speed

    2. Edit Group Path

    3. Hit "Previous" button until you are able to enter orders for Point #0

    4. Enter a new speed with F2 for Point #0

Initial starting speed should now be set.

I took a second look at your ViConds and there may be some ambiguity. There are two On Station ViConds that are "And" conditions and 3 ViConds that are "Or" conditions. I don't know how (what order) the game evaluates the various conditions or the connectors. I know that 10 ships arrived at both of the locations specified. I also killed sufficient ships, and bases. AFAIK, the only ViCond in doubt was the number of submarines. Unfortunately, no victory was awarded.

  8. It is a major engagement between NATO and Soviet forces. Objetives are to sunk as many ships and subs as you can, and to destroy enemy land bases. Soviet side can achieve tactical victory with a patrol around Reikjavik (Iceland) or Orland (Norway) for 48 hours.

    Congratulations on your first scenario.

I ran it through from the Red side. It's pretty challenging. I followed your orders here and could not achieve victory. My ships arrived off Norway without loss and most of them reached Iceland. I did not realize that there were other ViConds as you didn't mention them here. I did not know that I had to sweep for submarines and thus did not sink the 10 subs required for victory.

You might want to check the Red groups. Several of them have no starting speed and thus won't move when controlled by the AI.

One thing that you might consider adding are some Russian Bears or Mays for ASW.

Thanks for creating and sharing it.

    Show of Force Battleset

These scenarios are based upon events described in the book, "Show of Force", by Charles D. Taylor, 1980, Charter Books. The United States has, ostensibly, established a Trident re-supply base in the Indian Ocean. The Soviets claim that such a base is meant to de-stabilize the region. Both nations have deployed extensive fleets to the Indian Ocean in a "Show of Force".

  10. Jeronimo Chiecchio (a.k.a. Angle of Attack) and I met up for a game and chose Katyusha Hunt, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

Syrian-backed Hezbollah is raining Katyusha rockets on Northern Israel. Israeli intelligence suggests that Hezbollah has over 10,000 such rockets flown in daily through Damascus from Tehran. Iran has an advanced missile program building anti-ship missiles and ground-attack missiles of various ranges and with ever-increasing accuracy. Katyusha is a terror weapon, but if Iran decides to supply Hezbollah with modern missiles and advanced guidance packages, then Israel is really in trouble. The Israeli government has decided that this threat warrants a pre-emptive strike on the missile manufacturing plants in Iran.

    attachment.php?attachmentid=23393&stc=1&d=1227418842

I did not know from which direction the Israelis would make their attack. With air-to-air refueling capabilities, they could approach from most any direction on the map. I ordered my Adnan up as soon as possible to give me a modicum of airborne early warning capability. I also had a pair of F-14A Tomcats. They both carried a couple of antiquated AIM-54A Phoenix missiles. I did not expect much from the missiles so I used them as mini-AWACs for their powerful AWG-9 radar, instead.

    attachment.php?attachmentid=23394&stc=1&d=1227418854

My warning assets were centred on Hamadan. If the Israelis decided to take a circuitous attack routing, hopefully, the additional time required would provide me sufficient warning and response time. Our Syrian friends reported detecting Eagle and Nachson radar over Jordan so it looked as though they were going to come straight through the middle.

    attachment.php?attachmentid=23395&stc=1&d=1227418865

While the Phantoms and Tomcats awaited the intruders, my air transports were trying to sneak into Syria carrying additional surface-to-surface rockets to re-supply Hezbollah. The first flight managed to evade detection by flying through the Turkish border and around Iraq. The second flight was decimated by 50% when intercepted by American Eagles operating out of Iraq and the third flight was annihilated by Turkish Falcons. I had to get 8 transports into Syria to secure the victory, but only six had arrived, thus far. It was going to prove a mighty challenge to ensure the arrival of the final two transports amid an inbound air strike.

    attachment.php?attachmentid=23397&stc=1&d=1227418916

The Israelis did try to run through the middle of the border. Two pairs of Eagles were detected at the last moment flying on the deck towards two of my border radar stations. I had no time to intercept before they released ordnance. One was badly hit and set afire, which finally consumed it. The second station was struck repeatedly by Mavericks which destroyed it, but not before a defending 100mm AAA battery shot down one of the attackers. The Eagle pilots were slow to release their ordnance and violated a fundamental precept of strike warfare university: never make repeated runs on an alerted enemy. This time, it cost them.

The survivor then turned his attentions towards my orbiting Adnan! A flight of 4x F-5 Tigers had been ordered to intercept and now they would get their chance. They accelerated to afterburner and caught the Eagle just as he was opening fire on the Adnan with Sparrows. Although occupied, the pilot managed to release a heat-seeking missile that killed a Tiger before they got within AA-8 Aphid range. With both hunter and hunted at afterburner speeds, the missiles soon became an afterthought as both sides were inside the minimum firing range after exchanging a single salvo. One more Tiger ate a missile while a second was shredded by cannon fire. The last surviving Tiger was just adjusting his cannon fire towards the Eagle when the Aphids did the same. It didn't matter if the cannon or the missiles destroyed the Eagle. The relieved Tiger pilot was just glad that the enemy was down, even at such a high price. The four Sparrows fired at the Adnan flew aimlessly past once their targeting radar was shot down.

    attachment.php?attachmentid=23396&stc=1&d=1227418897

The second pair of Eagles was met by three Phantoms. One was fortuitously shot down by a Phoenix! How ironic it was for an American missile to be shooting down a Jewish aircraft 30 years later. Two Phantoms were quickly destroyed by Sparrows, but the survivor launched a brace that claimed the second Eagle. With both Eagles down, the radar crew noticed that there did not appear to be any defending fighters between the Phantom and the Israeli Nachson electronic warfare plane so they gambled and sent the Phantom to intercept on afterburner. They knew that his chances of survival were slim in the American-dominated Iraqi environment, but the opportunity to kill Israelis in groups of 12+ was too good to pass up. The Israelis wanted to poke out my eyes and now they were going to get the return treatment. The Phantom caught up with the Nachson and let loose with a full salvo of Sidewinders before an AMRAAM blew his left wing off. The Sidewinders did their job and the Nachson went down in flames.

We had to save the game at this point. Looking forward to the conclusion. Thanks to AoA for an enjoyable session and for the use of his server.

  11. Okay, Here is the file. I did the analyze scenario thing, and it said there were incomplete parts. I do not know how to set a starting speed, I will set a speed and yet it doesn't show it. Please tell me exactly how to fix anything that is wrong, I would greatly appreciate it! And this is my first ever scenario, so it is fairly simplistic, and I tried to not make anything overly complicated. Thank you for your help!

To set the starting speed, you first plot the path. Then, you have to Edit the path by going back to Point 0 and entering an initial speed. This will get your unit moving.

I tried the scen in both GE and ScenEdit and it did not crash on me. Can you provide any additional details on re-creating your crash?

IMO, when hunting for bugs, there is no such thing as too much detail. The more you can describe, the faster someone else will be able to try and replicate the crash. You won't be insulting anyone's intelligence if you describe it with, "First, turn on the power. Then load up the game. Hit key A, then B, then Command XXX with Option YYY activated and wait 10 seconds before doing ZZZ...."

  12. Welcome (back) aboard, shipmate. B)

The simplest way to get help is to have the file available for others to DL and examine. Just zip it up and attach it to your message. Any number of explanations might be possible.

One that comes to mind is the possibility of a 'null group'. This is a group that has been inserted, but doesn't have any units in it. You can check for such a group by cycling through all the groups with the spacebar in the SE.

  13. Let me know when this opens- I'll be voting for Herman.

Don't you dare! (Or else all ships in the PlayersDB will be re-named "Silent Hunter" so that they can be sunk over, and over, again...)

I'll be voting AoA for the yearly achievement and Freek Schepers for the Lifetime award.

    Bears at Bay

Action in the Bay of Biscay -- Much of NATO's sea power is based in European Atlantic ports. The shallow body of water known as the Bay of Biscay is a virtual highway for merchant and naval traffic. Because shallow water makes ASW detection more difficult, Soviet submariners can attack here with a good chance of success.

  16. Today, we introduced Tom (a.k.a. Tuhhodge) into ANW MP with a pair of matches. We selected "Dawn Patrol", written for the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

Our first encounter was with me playing the Russians. It was over quickly with a barrage of SS-N-9 Sirens. However, Tom learned very quickly! :bite:

We re-played it from the same sides. This time, Tom got the drop on me. He detected and sank 33% of my force before I even had a chance to fire. My two surviving boats immediately opened fire on his missile boat flotilla and sank four of them, but that wasn't good enough. My orders were to sink at least 5.

    attachment.php?attachmentid=23281&stc=1&d=1226106345

Out of missiles and out of luck, I turned to flee and preserve my force. Unfortunately, Tom had back-tracked the missiles to my boats' locations and sent Penguins down my throat. That was his mistake. I was hiding behind one of his country's fisherman. Half of his salvo locked onto his hapless fisherman while the others sank my two surviving boats. Although I was totally routed, I considered the game a draw since Tom sank a neutral party. [:D]

Thanks for a great pair of games, Tom. And thanks to AoA for the use of the server.

  17. The 64th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year!

    Stealth Attack

    stealthgn3.th.gifthpix.gif

Four days prior to the U.S. elections, the President decides to solve the Iranian nuclear issue once and for all and authorizes an attack by stealth bombers and fighter bombers based in Diego Garcia and Al Udeid. If the efforts fail, U.S. assets based in the region may be permitted conventional strikes.

Iran, however, obtained the news about this top secret information days in advance and managed to secure the help of Russia in defending her territory. Moscow agreed to temporarily base three of her most advanced fighter squadrons in Central Iran and, for the exorbitant price of USD 1 billion, hinted that a sophisticated counter-strike may be a realistic possibility.

The Iranian military is on full alert and prepares for pre-emptive strikes against military and civilian targets on the Arabian Peninsula - and in the Near East.

  18. So far as I can tell the main difference between the two versions is single user v multi-user. I expect mainly single user, but for the small price difference multi-user would be nice if there were no penalties or 'gotchas'.
MP is the only strictly compelling reason to choose ANW over HCE. Otherwise it comes down to what you enjoy. Both games continue to be developed.

I'll respectfully disagree with this proposition. Both games are similar in play, but there are some significant differences, notwithstanding the MP capability in ANW.

The best way to answer this question to your own satisfaction is to just run the quick demos. The ANW demo is here:

    http://computerharpoon.com/public/Harpoon_..._Demo_39410.exe

You seem to already know how HC runs, so it will be a good contrast for you to see. Also, if you want to try out an MP session, just let it be known and it can be arranged after you finish the ANW Demo.

  19. The 63rd NEW Harpoon scenario of the year!

    Svalbard Oil Battleset

The discovery of the third largest oil and gas reserves on the planet near the Svalbard Islands led to a dispute with Russia, who has mining rights and maintains settlements on Spitsbergen, claiming that the islands belong to the chain of islands of Franz Josef Land.

    svaoil1rg3.th.gif

    Svalbard Oil 1: The Blockade

In a surprise move Russia landed troops in Longyearbyen ten days ago and occupied some of the major oil platforms.

Norway filed a protest with the UN and requested formal NATO assistance, which immediately was granted. NATO is now assembling forces to break the blockade around the Svalbards, but Norway does not want to wait and intends to show the flag, while Russia reinforces her new possessions.

    svaoil2cy7.th.gifthpix.gif

Svalbard Oil 2: NATO Strikes Back

The attempt of the Royal Norwegian Navy to settle the dispute over the Svalbard Islands with rather limited resources was a failure, though the two Norwegian submarines managed to sink two warships before being sunk themselves.

NATO reaction is quick, aggressive and resourceful: A British CVBG, a Dutch PHIBRON and a German SAG are sailing towards the Svalbards, supported by a number of nuclear and diesel attack submarines. The message is evident: Europe wants to show it can deal with the crisis without the help of the policeman from across the Atlantic, though there are some U.S. units and aircraft in the area ready to assist.

But the Russian resolve will soon become apparent. Russia has every intention to keep her occupied new territories as well as the vast oil and gas reserves discovered there and has mobilized everything still available in her military inventory to do so.

    coldwarhs7.th.gif

The End of the Cold War

Something went entirely wrong, and it happened so fast that nobody could recall immediately when and where it started. The Soviets were under the impression that NATO was preparing for an attack on the motherland and decreed that securing Iceland for a prolonged war was vital to victory; thus they mobilized each operational vessel in the Northern Fleet and managed to occupy the Faroes as a prelude. NATO then, too, scrambled every available asset in the North Atlantic, and when the first shot (a nuclear-tipped torpedo) was fired and sank a Dutch frigate, all hell broke loose.

    Battleset: Svalbard Oil

    Svalbard Oil Battleset

The discovery of the third largest oil and gas reserves on the planet near the Svalbard Islands led to a dispute with Russia, who has mining rights and maintains settlements on Spitsbergen, claiming that the islands belong to the chain of islands of Franz Josef Land.
