Hi,

I am looking for Harpoon 3.6 colonial wars (50-64) database. I tried to download through http://www.warfaresims.com/?page_id=15but it seems link is not working.

I'm a Chinese player, and I got a copy of the database editor from TonyE(thank you!).

But when I try to import the database into the editor, it crashed. And there was a pop-up messagebox on the screen which says "error 6: overflow!"

After conducted several tests, I found the problem occurred only when you are using a non-english system.

Here's the reasonable explanation:(I will take the Chinese edition of win7 into example)

There's a bug about the unicode between different language: If you're using the Chinese system and there exist some special terms of english words, such as 's, 'v, 'd and so on, the system will translate the terms into a less Chinese letter such as 暰幮咱乽嵟廔抯娍背开俣乿傪.

I viewed the code of editor in VB mode and founde the ReadInteger() is designed as a function that can only read a 2-bytes value. As we all know, a english letter occupy 2 bytes while a Chinese letter will occupy 4 bytes.

So when the editor read data from the the .dat files, the "overflow" error will occur where the Chinese letter stands.

So I changed the unicode option in win7 system to "English(US)", and there were no error anymore.

I write this to strongly recommend the non-english players to change their unicode option to English before you use the editor.

Would it be possible to provide more information updates about progress on the HUD-4? Specifically, would it be possible to start going through the various platforms posted in the request forum and...

* If the platform has been added to the database, move the request (or have one of the moderators move it) to the archive so it is no longer cluttering up the request forum--although as the person who did most of the cluttering, I really should not be complaining about this.

* If the platform has been accepted, but not added yet, could you let us know what the status is? Is it likely to be added in the next month? Next year? How high is it on the "to do" list?

* If a platform is on the "Waiting until more information comes in" list, could you let us know if that information has come in yet?

* If the platform has been requested, but no response has been given, could you let us know what you think of the request--this could simply be responding with "Yes, it will be added," or "It may be added, but I am waiting for data to be added to the annexes" or "Sorry, this one will not be added."

Rather than try to do this all at once, I would recommend just doing one or two each day or so, and work through the list bit by bit. Not only would this make the project easy to fit into your schedule (which I know is pretty heavy right now with work responsibilities), but having a few new posts every day or so by the database editor (as opposed to the crazy guy writing scenarios) will probably stimulate interest in the HUD-4, and perhaps encourage more players and maybe even a few more scenario writers. If you can do more, great, but I understand you're really busy right now. I'm just hoping we can get a little more information about progress on the HUD-4.

Anyway, it's an idea. I hope you will be able to do it. Thanks.

(Bug squashed!)

I am pleased to report that the new version of the HUD-4, v. 1.2, with its updated data annexes, seems to have squashed at least one bug that has taken quite a while to track down and bring to justice. The AIM-7E-2/3 missile carried by many of the early Phantoms now fires and kills targets. (Some of the other AIM-7s always worked fine, but for the longest time the E-series just would not lock on and fire.)

The missile is still a bit persnickety! As far as I can tell, you have to have a clear fix on the target's altitude or it will not lock on. But it is now possible to get it to fire and it will kill the aircraft at which one is shooting.

I have not yet tested the other few remaining troublemaker weapons (Maverick-Ds, etc.) to see if the new HUD-4 has resolved their issues as well, but this is good news!

Here are a couple of screen shots to show the AIM-7E-2/3 in action...

Gunny had mentioned the possibility of putting out an update to the HUD-4 every month or so.

Would it make sense to simply use a regular schedule? Maybe every other month? Basically, whatever gets done during that period, whether it is a lot or a little, major fixes or just a couple of new platforms, is what goes into the update. So we might see releases in, say, February, April, June, August, October, and December of each year. Some would be big ones and some would be not so big, but they would come on a regular basis, and everyone would know when the next one was coming.

Ultimately, this is Gunny's decision, but I would encourage him to do something like this...my experience as a teacher, a scholar, and a writer is that scheduled deadlines like this help you get the work done, and help you figure out how to fit a particular project into the rest of your schedule. It can actually make things easier.

Anyway, it is just a thought.

When I launch AH-64s (and Longbows) in a test scenario, the game treats them as...well, I don't know what, but it is not treating them as my aircraft. It detects them, as if they were a bogie, and then I cannot navigate them, even though they are my aircraft and launched from my base. This does not happen with other helicopters that I have tested, so I wonder if there is a database flag somewhere that is telling the game to treat them as...missiles rather than aircraft? I figured I better report this.

I'm not sure if this is a problem with the database or something I am doing wrong, but I've been testing the AIM-7 missiles (as carried by various versions of the F-4) and I am having a lot of trouble. I cannot get either the AIM-7C or the AIM-7E to fire at ANYTHING. I've tried them against T-34 Mentors AND against 737s, so it's not the type of aircraft that's creating the problem.

I recommend a complete review of the AIM-7 variants for the HUD-4 database as soon as it is practical to do so, all of them, in case I've missed something, although I think the AIM-7M is okay.

MH-60R and MH-60S seem unable to use the AGM-114 Hellfire. When they are close enough to fire, and I try to use the Hellfires, they say "Cannot illuminate target." This seems to happen no matter what I do, so I don't think it's simply that I'm coming in from the wrong direction or anything like that (I'm not sure that would matter with a helicopter anyway).

The MH-60R does not seem to have trouble firing the AGM-119 Penguin and the MQ-8 Fire Scout IS able to fire its Hellfires at exactly the same target.

I figured I better report this so Gunny can figure it out. I'd recommend checking other platforms that use the Hellfire, too, as some of them may have the same problem.

On a related note, I have had a similar problem with Mavericks (AGM-65s), not just occasionally not seeing a target (the RIM-66s do this sometimes, but then they will finally see the target and fire) but NEVER seeing the target and NEVER firing, so I would check those as well. Something is causing these weapons to not "see" their targets and not fire, and I do not think it is anything the target is doing, which suggests it may be a database error or some other bug.

Thanks.
