  2. A Dragon in South Africa, April 2015. Historical Training Scenario.

A Dragon in South Africa, April 2015. Historical Training Scenario.

A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for the South Africa Battleset and the HCDB-140909 1980-2015 era Platform Database.

Image: HMS Dragon in the English Channel in 30 August 2011, photo by LA(Phot) Nicky Wilson, photo taked from Wikipedia Commons and in OGL (Open Government License).

This scenario is designed to be played from the Blue/UK side or from the Red/South Africa side. Is a very simple and introductory scenario, inspired in the limited and criticized Type 45 ASW capabilities.

In April 2015 the British Type 45 air defence-oriented destroyer HMS Dragon was in good will visit to Cape Town and played some ASW exercises against the South African submarine SAS Manthatisi, a ten years old German build and designed Type 209/1400 conventional diesel-electric submarine.
As Type 45 is very criticized because her limited ASW capabilities (and many in the class also without anti-ship missiles), is a good time to essay a situation as that tested in the exercise.
Of course if you sink the enemy unit you win, but is a training exercise and actually shots weren't fired and none was hurt ...

  3. Beira Patrol going hot, 1966.

Beira Patrol going hot, March 1966.

Image: HMS Eagle 1970, photograph by Isaac Newton, source: Wikipedia from the HMS Minerva (F45) web site http://www.hmsminerva.info/photos1.htm

A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for the South Africa Battleset and the HCCW-120614 Cold War Platform Database.

This scenario is designed for play by the British/Blue or by the Combined/Red side, to avoid spoilers is better to play many times first the British/Blue side, and only after the Combined/Red side. Is a long and probably difficult scenario. If you see it too difficult playing the Blue side, you can play the provided alternate scenario with the support of the South African forces.

Was it possible a naval blockade to a land-locked country?
After the unilateral independence of Rhodesia in 1965 (Renamed Zimbabwe from 1980), the United Kingdom with the United Nations support, both fearing the establishment of a white minority racist government, embargoed the oil exportations to Rhodesia.
The infamous Beira Patrol was established for his control by the Royal Navy. The Patrol lasted from 1966 to the Mozambique independence in 1975 as consequence of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution, with the new country government guaranteeing the sanctions to Rhodesia and the Patrol retired by UK. Initially the Beira Patrol was also equipped with aircraft carriers and late only with one or two frigates and shore-based planes (Based to 1971 in Majunga, Malagasy Republic), checking on oil tankers heading for Beira, in the Portuguese colony of Mozambique.
UN Security Council Resolution 221 (1966) ridiculously limited the oil blockade to the Portuguese port of Beira in the Mozambique colony, site of the Rhodesia-connected oil pipeline terminus (And Portugal was the oldest British ally!). Absurdly as the oil can enter by other ports, as Lourenco Marques (renamed Maputo after the Mozambique independence), or with the tankers sailing in the six nautical miles Portuguese territorial waters along the Mozambican coast, from South Africa to Beira! Also, only British forces were allowed to participate in Security Council Resolution, and the UK have not enough forces to effectively establish the blockade.
In this scenario the Carnation Revolution was some nine years earlier, the Mozambican independence almost instantaneous (as in 1975), some others African governments are deposed or clearly more pro-Soviet than historically, and the Soviet Union is supporting an difficult pact with the Ian Smith government, for sake of strategic interests.
Note: This scenario is labelled as "Historical" because the Rhodesian, Portuguese, South African (in the alternate scenario) and UK forces are as the historically deployed at the Beira Patrol start, including the carrier air wings. Clearly the crisis was quiet and without major incidents. They are two alternative scenario files, one with and another without South Africa supporting the old British Empire remains.
    Unnamed places are:
ZYa, Beira (Portuguese Base Aerea BA-8) airport, BEW/FQBR, Mozambique.
ZXa, Lourenco Marques (Portuguese Aerodromo-Base AB-8 (confuse, not?!), now Maputo) airport, MPM/FQMA, Mozambique.
ZWa, New Sarum (now Manyame) Air Force Station, HRE/FVHA, Rhodesia.
ZVa, Thornhill (now Gweru-Thornhill) Air Base, GWE/FVTL, Rhodesia.
ACa, Majunga (now Amborovy) airport, MJN/FMNM, Malagasy Republic.
AKA, Bloemspruit AFB, BFN/FABL, South Africa.
AJa, Durban AFB, DUR/FADN, South Africa.
ANa, Langebaan AFS (now AFB), SBD/FALW, South Africa.
AFa, Pietersburg (now Polokwane IA) AFB, PTG/FAPP, South Africa.
ALa, Port Elizabeth AFB (now AFS), PLZ/FAPE, South Africa.
AMa, Simon's Town Port, South Africa.
AIa, Swartkop AFB, FASK, South Africa.
AGa, Waterkloof AFB, WKF/FAWK, South Africa.

  4. Sons of Neptune

A Harpoon Commander's Edition (HCE) scenario for the South Africa battleset.

This scenario is designed for play by either the BLUE or RED side.

Most folks have probably never heard of the Agalega Islands, which lie about 400 nm northeast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Their remote location is key to their importance, especially from the perspective of burgeoning blue water navies like India and China. The islands straddle a vital shipping route for a great deal of commercial traffic around Cape Horn, including supertankers too large to pass through the Suez. They are also a valuable stepping stone for economic investment in Africa, again the focus of energy hungry nations like India and China. When the Mauritian government signed a long term lease to India of their sovereign territory in the Agalega Islands, China was furious. It backed a long held claim by Myanmar to the Nicobar and Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal, ostensibly in retaliation against India. New Delhi returned the favour by interdicting Chinese commercial shipping.

  5. Headbutt #2

    The Headbutts
This is series of three HCE scenarios, intended primarily for beginning and intermediate HCE players. They are small, and playable from RED or BLUE in each case. I hope that these will serve as a training tool for beginners, and an overview of the relative capabilities of American, French, Russian, and British carrier groups around 2014 or so for more advanced players. "Historical" accuracy is a goal, so Tomcats, Backfires, Vikings, etc. are absent in this collection. A guide to the included aircraft and weapons derived from the HCDB 101213 database, giving weapon speeds, ESM details, etc. is included with each scenario. Please use this database as older ones will cause inaccurate play balance.
This package will be followed in time with much more difficult scenarios playable by one side only.
Butt1 USA vs Russia, South Africa. Easy (BLUE) Difficult (RED)
Butt2 France vs Russia, South Africa, Intermediate (BLUE) Intermediate (RED)
Butt3 UK and Denmark vs Russia, GIUK, Intermediate (BLUE) Intermediate (RED) and somewhat larger.

as always I look forward to your comments.

  7. Trophy Hunters

    Trophy Hunters

A Harpoon Commanders Edition (HCE) scenario for the South Africa Battleset.

This scenario is designed for play by the BLUE side only.

In 1969, thousands of Chinese workers began arriving at the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam and immediately set to work on the TAZARA project, a national railway that would stretch deep into the East African interior and would not only connect remote rural communities but also drive across southern Tanzania into the Zambian copper belt. Back then Tanzanian national leaders had first approached Western nations to assist with the project, but one after another, the USA, Great Britain, and even the United Nations and the Soviet Union, all turned them down. The Communist Chinese, however, seized the opportunity, and now, nearly 50 years later, the investment was paying off in a big way. Large deposits of uranium have been discovered near the northern end of Lake Nyasa, and the People's Republic of China is keen to realize on its long term investment. Unfortunately, the area is also the subject of a longstanding boundary dispute between Tanzania and its western neighbor, Malawi. Perhaps repeating the transgressions of the Western colonial powers more than a hundred years before, the Chinese are not about to permit anything to stand in the way of their plans for strategic economic gain.

In response to rising tensions between Malawi and Tanzania, the PRC has moved significant military forces into Tanzania.

  8. Task Force Rybakov

    Task Force Rybakov

A Harpoon Commander's Edition (HCE) scenario for the South Africa Battleset.

This scenario is intended for play by the RED side only.

This scenario is a RED side sequel to my earlier scenario, Sixth Battle, which of course is a tribute to a favorite novel of mine, The Sixth Battle by Barrett Tillman. Although some effort has been expended at recreating the battle depicted in that book, I have also taken varied some of the events and players to make a workable Harpoon scenario. The scenario background contained in the file is considerably more detailed, but essentially:

Several large Soviet battle groups, now operating under the banner of the Union of Eurasian Republics (UER), have assembled off the coast of South Africa. Their intention is to force a change of power in the Republic of South Africa (RSA), into one that favors the African National Congress (ANC) and, indirectly, the Front Line States (FLS) of Angola, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The UER has cut a deal with the ANC and FLS to form a cartel that would extend to all of the RSA’s resources, including uranium. Hard line regimes in the client states of Cuba, North Korea, and Vietnam have pledged their assistance.

The American carrier forces have been caught out of position. Meanwhile, Task Force Rybakov has taken up station off the coast of the Republic of South Africa (RSA). The Pacific Fleet carrier Novorossiysk has been delayed but is now transiting the Mozambique Channel and should be on station and ready to conduct operations within 24 hours. Our amphibious landings in the RSA will be supported by air strikes from the carriers. The South Africans stand virtually no chance without American intervention. Now is our time to strike.

The UER and its allies in the region have overwhelming firepower, and the South Africans stand virtually no chance without American intervention.

The elderly US Navy carrier USS Ranger is the only NATO carrier in the Indian Ocean, and it can count on little support from other friendly forces. The Ranger battle group has been planning for several days the best way to attack the UER carriers, plotting and wargaming several possible options, and now they think they have found a winning idea.
